Question gas n diesel tank.....

I went to a new station to get diesel and the diesel was a black handle and the gas was green so I ended up putting 5.6 gal of gas in my front tank before I realized what I was doing. I had between a quarter and a half tank of diesel before adding the gas. I have been told by one person that I can fill it the rest of the way with diesel and run it, one person said as long as the mix is no more that 2/3 gas that its ok to run, and another said that all of the tank has to be drained. Will I be safe taking the easy way out or should I take the tank off and get all of the gas out?

Fill it to the top with diesel and drive it. The worst thing that can happen is it will quit running and you will have to drain the fuel anyways. I had this happen a few years ago when a station attendant (no self serve) did the same to mine. I caught him after a few gallons and then topped it with diesel. Ran just fine that way.

Best to read the pump for what is dispenses in future..............

I would advise syphon out all you can and refill with diesel.....call it a lesson learned. If you do continue with gas and fill it with diesel, add some Diesel fuel lubricity product. Such as Stanadyne lubricity or Hayes Diesel treat..... reason being the fuel will be much drier than normal due to the gasoline. Dry fuel with poor lubricity will/can do damage to the Injection Pump.

Fill it almost to the top, then put in a gallon of a good nice thick oil (Straight 40w or so).

Agree with others, fill with diesel fuel and add a gallon of oil or atf. should be fine, as a diesel mechanic have had to deal with this several times.

It shouldn't make any difference, By the way did you report the problem to the station?

Ok. I did report it to the station. She said that she has seen it happen there alot over the time she has been there. I don't guess they are planning on changing that. Most places I have been to have 87, 93, then diesel but this place has diesel first and its Green. So, be careful if you fuel up at a Kangaroo station!!!

I believe that it is federal law that diesel nozzles are green. Trying to confirm that.

That would sure help... I guess its my fault and wouldnt have happend if I had took time to read it. But other than that one station, every place I have ever been to had diesel in green and after the 93 or at its own single pump. Im glad that I stayed with my truck instead of walking off while it filled up! I guess I will go get some oil and fill it up with diesel the rest of the way. This site has helped me out a few times and I have learned alot. I tust the info on this site over anyone else when it comes to my truck.

There is a gas station where I used to live that was the same way, for some reason they had 87, 89 and diesel at the regular pumps while 93 was off by with the kerosene, with a green handle, I witnessed at least 5 people fill up diesels with gas there, I never worked there but it was so close to home and work that I would stop by there ever couple of days. I seen a few people get really furious with the attendants for not having better signage, but to my knowledge they have still never changed it, They really should at least put a bigger sign up to let people know it is not diesel.

this happened to my grandfather once, he consulted a diesel mechanic and they told him to put a quart or two of atf and told him it would be fine, and it was.

i think it would be ok since you topped the rest off with diesel.

but the best thing to do would be to siphon it out.

a small portion of gas will not harm anything, and haynes specifies that 30% or less will be unnoticable

Thanx guys, I filled my tank the rest of the way up with diesel and added some 40 and sulfer replacement and it ran fine! I added more diesel when I got down to 3/4 a tank and again at half a tank just to be extra safe. I have filled it up 2 time after that and no problems at all. If anything it runs better! LOL

No problemo, about it running better that probably because the gas dissolved alot of the gunk built up in your IP and injectors. I've heard of some of the old men put a couple of gallons of gas for a cleaner.
