Best Receiver Hitch Shackle?

Good morning All,

I'm looking for a good D-ring shackle for the receiver hitch. Who makes a good one?

Thanks

Any solid mount will be almost fine. Some are hollow, and these will break.
Now, the problem you have is that you have a Super Duty and that SD is heavy especially when it is stuck.
Where I am going with this is that most shackle mounts will only accommodate the 3/4" bow shackle, and this rather small shackle is only rated to 10,000 lbs.
I gurantee that you will be in excess of this rating if you stick that truck real bad.

I run large trucks, and I am stuck pretty bad once in a while. I find much better results with larger pintle hook type recievers.
Most recovery straps large enough to accomodate trucks this large will not even fit in a small 3/4" bow shackle. So what do you do? You will be foreced to run something larger.
Here is an example:
I use these front and rear:

These permit quick and easy installation of the recovery rope, or strap without damage to either.
Try taking a bow shackle apart and put it back together while it is burried in the mud. Very difficult. These are pretty easy to use.

Great! I forgot about those hitches. A buddy of mine uses that type of hitch to pull around his plumbing equipment (~11k trailer). So who makes a good one of these? Reese? Somebody else?

How about these:
Trailer Parts Superstore - Pintle Hooks, Mounts & Rings
I think I'll get the 15-ton pintle hook (PH15) and the 2-hole set adapter mount (PM84). I wonder if this is made in China crap or decent stuff?

There are different sizes for these as well. I just searched the web for some images of these. They have the pintle end in ratings up to 20 tons. The reciever is not rated this high so it would be overkill.
Trailer supply places have them, and industrial supply houses have them as well. Use adequate fasteners, and keep it lubed.
They close far enough to accomodate larger ropes and straps and do not destroy the ends.
Many of the big hitters use these out here where I am at. Expect to drop around 80 bucks for this set-up but believe me this is worth it in the ling run.

Here is an image of one being used in the front.

Some may recognoze this truck. It belongs to a buddy of mine, (Rob) and this was taken after his photo shoot for the magazine, but gives you a decent view of this style of recovery point:

Many thanks 75. Reps your way. Yes, the 15-ton hook is overkill but that's OK - I'm a big believer in overkill. The hook, adapter mount, and mounting kit (with grade 8 hardware) is $115 shipped. I didn't think that was too bad.
So, does your buddy take that thing off road?

Nahhhh, not as often as mine. I am gonna have to bug him about that. Now that he has made the cover of a magazine, I suspect that he will keep it clean and never run it in the mud again. Yeah right!!!!!

Keep in mind that there is always a weak link....check your hitch rating....i saw a guys class 3 hitch get torn off while trying to pull him out.....broke the hitch right at the tube welds....

If I was still using the stock receiver hitch I wouldn't have any worries - it's a class 5 rated for 15k (I think). I had to take it off for my aftermarket bumper which is a Tough Country 4" sch 40 pipe that bolts to the frame (4 bolts). I'll check the welds on the receiver built into the bumper but I know it isn't rated for what the factory receiver is.

Yes, it made the cover. I can tell you guys that there is more to come. This big ford is only the beginning! You should hear this giant thing. Almost makes my pumpkin seem small. (Almost!) Rob is a cool cat, and he was conservative in the writeup.
You can expact to see more of this large truck in a few future issues. This I can tell you for a fact.
Little off topic here, but you will be able to read more about this vehicle.
This truck is similar to the vehicles that we wheel with on a weekly basis. We have some reasonably cool trucks out here.
Wait till you see the big trux with 49's and 54's. They have license plates too! same mag has been out here documenting our weekly activities.
Robs truck was only one example of a local truck. Looks a little rough I know, but it is still beautiful to me........You have to see this fool drive this thing!
Fear is not an option for him.
