Pennsylvania Idling Law

New idling law being inforced in Penn as of 1/1/09.

Idling law
A new state law prohibits a diesel-powered motor vehicle with a gross weight of 10,001 pounds or more, engaged in commerce, from idling for more than 5 minutes in any continuous 60-minute period.
A bus, school bus, or school vehicle may idle for no more than a total of 15 minutes in a continuous 60-minute period to provide heating or air conditioning when non-driver passengers are on board.
There is an exception to the prohibition for an occupied vehicle with a sleeper berth. An occupied vehicle with a sleeper berth may idle to provide heating or air conditioning during a rest or sleep period when the outside temperature is less than 40°F or greater than 75°F at any time during the rest or sleep period. This exception does not apply if the vehicle is parked at a location equipped with stationary idle reduction technology that is available at the start of the rest period. This exception expires May 1, 2010.
There are also exceptions for traffic conditions, inspections, maintenance, vehicles involved in solid waste or recyclable collection, emergency vehicles, and other situations.

Glad that don't apply to pickup trucks. None of our trucks weight in at 10,000 lbs.

Wouldn't matter anyway Rick, it says "engaged in commerce." BTW, I think the F450/550 come in over the 10k mark.

ive heard of these kind of laws before... ive heard of several states with anti-idle laws. sometimes they target specifically semi's. but supposively some of those laws are in states where they have some external heating-a/c and free cable hookups.. ya somehow plug the trucks into them, and they got large flexible venting ducts.. i dunno what its called.. but the only reason i know about the ducting thing is cuz of an episode on TrickMyTruck awhile back where they put it in some guys rig and showed him how to use it...

It's called IDLEAIR and it isn't cheap. States with these laws only apply them to the main engine, If you have an APU on your truck it is exempt, except in California where it has to meet the newer CARB standard in order to be exempt.

Won't be too long it will be government mandated for all states as far as clean air laws go. Government is bailing everyone out so they need more money from the masses. So i forsee it will eventually trickle down to our beloved trucks too. Just another way to keep the working class down, thing is the working class is putting food on everyone's table.

sadly that be the truth... whole election they kept talking about the middle class.. (they clarified it as people making 120K or more... ) but sadly the majority of us make 30-40 K a year... maybe 60-80K if your dual income family..

Yep some don't realize the trickle down effect of fuel prices. Takes fuel to deliver the goods, just want a politician to make it on our wages i think they would change their tune real quick. See how they like struggling like we do every day. Hey i know trading spaces make them get their hands dirty LOL. Me personally i like getting dirty makes me feel like i did an honest days work, seems like some don't want to earn their keep anymore. Next thing they will do is tax the air we breathe hahaha wouldn't that just suck??? Sorry you have used up your oxygen quota for today LOL
