Tranny Problems

Sorry to hear about your experience - Sounds fairly similar to what I experienced in January, and it required a rebuild or replacement. The fact that it has happened so early is scarey. In other threads I have read on here someone stated that our trannies have no predictable life; might go soon or it might last 150K+. Considering you are looking at $2K to $4.5K to repair this, that is a substantial cost to absorb on something that should last longer IMO. If you rely on the theory that maintaining your truck and changing fluids will translate into a long trouble-free ownership, this type of break down really puts into question this product. It would seem to me that if this has been the #1 selling VEHICLE in the US, Ford should have a great product on the road, with a high level of reliability and longevity.
The question you have to answer for yourself is how long do you plan to own this truck. Shorter period; probably a rebuild is the way to go. Longer period; probably the rebuilt option from Ford that gives you a 100K /three year waranty is the best route. Since I tend to keep my vehicles over 100K, I would probably opt for the option from Ford if it had happened to me at 64K miles. But, since mine failed at 114K, I went with a rebuild because I doubt I will own this vehicle for more than another 25K. The shop that did mine increased their waranty from 12K/12 months to 18K/18months because they recognized that I took good care of the truck and that it didn't get a lot of stress put on it. Possibly whoever you find to do it will give you a better waranty than the typical industry standard.
I was not prepared to do this because I need my vehicles on the road, but if you have the time and ability it was suggested to me that I pull it myself because I would save a lot of money.
It may take a little time to get a suggestion on a good shop in your area. The reference that came to me on this thread was a few weeks late, and came in after I had already found an option in my area.
Good luck! Let us know what you learn because this appears to be a common problem but it doesn't seem to be address on this site too often.
