Well dad and I went to Midstate Tractor today to buy a new chainsaw to replace the nutless POS MS210C. We went in and went to the wall-o-saws. We both knew we were going to be leaving with an MS290, but I tried to nudge dad a little to get an MS361 instead. No luck. They run the same size bar and the 361 was 600$ whereas the 290 was like 370$. Well we left with an MS290 with an 18" bar and yellow chain. Yellow chain is the good chain. Green chain is the ultra-reduced kickback junk.

Midstate was empty except for us and employees when we walked in. We were in there for probably 20-25 minutes between picking a saw, getting the bar swapped, and filling out the paperwork. Only one other customer came in during that whole time period. It probably had something to do with our crappy weather today.

Hey Pete... if you have not had a chance to use the 290 yet, you will love that saw I bought one in the summer of 2007 and have used it to cut two tri-axle log truck loads of logs with nada problems. I got mine with a 20" bar which I am glad that I did It is a very strong, smooth running saw and I could cut all day with out feeling like my hands and arms were going to fall off. This was purchased to replace a POS throw away Poulan that I got 10 years ago.

Actually Pat, it is not too bad here right now, but later when the winds start to come out of the NW then it will be a different story.

I think it's supposed to be decent here, somewhat anyway, through the weekend, then the temps plummet next week. Oh goodie.

I wanted the 18" bar because it was bought to replace an MS210 with an I don't know how long of a bar. It's not going to be doing a ton of heavy cutting. Just taking down maybe 2 dozen trees or so a year. For the heavier cutting we've got an MS460 with a 28" bar. That sucker chews wood like you wouldn't believe.

Hay Shaun I do not follow most sports. The only sport that I follow has the sweet smell of nitromethane- NHRA drag racing.

The family chainsaws are Stihl and the bars are 20" iirc.

That bar length was settled upon when we all were younger.

That bar length is just short enough to fit the stove for firebox length and door diagonal which took the guessing out of the cutting.

If the bar can't cut through without rolling the log then we would split it, otherwise we were assured that the log doesn't need splitting and will make it through the stove's door.

Now that we're all much older we split the majority of the logs as we're not that enthusiastic about lifting heavy logs just to impress.
