If Yosemite is too far South, you can find a grove of Sierra Redwoods (aka Sequoias) at Calaveras Big Trees, up Hwy 4 out of Angel's Camp, California. The Coastal Redwoods are very beautiful, but the Sierra Redwoods are pretty impressive in their own right.
As stated, the Mariposa Grove is spectacular with some very huge Sierra Redwoods. Then there is also Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park, all where you can find very impressive Sierra (Sequoia) Redwood stands. Sometime in the future you should try and make it to those National Parks. Just make sure you have enough time to get out and make the most out of the experience, time wise.

It sounds like this trip you will be enjoying the Coastal Redwood variety, however. Enjoy your trip. California is a spectacular state. If it just wasn't for all the danged people.

I was wondering where all the people went. There's only about 25 people left here. I haven't been to Wells Gray yet! So much to see, so little cash for fuel...

Crew,
My vote, definitely Lassen Park, can even camp in the area. The elk, don't get to close the bulls can be a bit protective of the cows and tourists look good mounted on their antlers. And the redwoods. Then whatever else you can fit in. You'll enjoy it all cause it is all quite spectacular. I grew up in Humboldt County and love the area. Also, don't let anyone talk you into driving over hiway 36. Your family won't appreciate you very much if you do.

If you're going to do an over night trip up the coast. Jedidiah Smith campground is a good place to spend the night. (You'll need a reservation)
Jedediah Smith Redwood SP

Battery Point Lighthouse is just outside of Crescent City.
Battery Point (Crescent City) Lighthouse, California at Lighthousefriends.com

At Crescent City you can take 199 up into Southern Oregon to Grants Pass and then come back down I-5 to Redding. On the way, you'll drive through my home town of Mt. Shasta.

It looks like a fantastic road for my taste...but I'd have to do that one alone for sure...probably not many places to stop...don't know...but one day....I will.

TH1567, it's a beautiful drive and there are places to stop and look over the scenery or lunch. But it takes longer than 299 and in a pickup and camper would take longer and not be appreciated by anyone not driving. When I'm alone and want to go from the coast to the valley I take 36. But with the family it's 299.
And when you go, make sure you fill up. Maybe a gas station will be open, but maybe not and if you breakdown it's hours away from any tow trucks.

Sights

I mentioned these in the older thread, but to reiterate, to the east, Burney Falls is a must-see, and to the west, the town of Ferndale a little south of Eureka/Arcata.

My vote goes for the Shasta Caverns:

Welcome To Lake Shasta Caverns: Three Adventures in One!

I've been through most of the caverns in NorCal and this one's the best I've been to. Hard to believe it's naturally made and not Hollywood...

Geeze, how did I miss this one?

Lassen and Plumas counties have the good stuff except for the ocean . . .
