Dealer says at 30k miles it needs to be replaced. But they want $54. Seems a little high priced to me. I replaced one on my old '88 F-150 I-6 gas for $10 years ago and it was not hard. So is this one for the dealer or can I do it? What special tools do I need and what do I need to know? Where is it located?

 

My truck is a 2002 F250 5.4 .... but if it helps any.. my fuel filter was mounted on the inside of the driver's side frame rail. It does take a special disconnect tool for the fittings, which I borrowed from Advance Auto when I bought the filter.

I did not try to do it without the tool. I think I will just buy the little tool next time. Anyway ... easy job.

 

I have an 06. It Does "Not" take any special tools. When you look at the hose that connects to the filter you should see a color plastic peice. You squeeze that peice and push the fitting toward the filter, then pull it off.

They went to a new style clamp and the good thing about it is if it breaks it can be repaired very easily.

I used a NAPA filter on mine $13.00 or so. I really like NAPA parts. I have gotten my fair share of garbage from Advance and Twilight Zone. Enough to learn my lesson and not go back unless its for Air freshoners or cars washes/wax.

If you let it sit overnight , before changing the filter, the pressure will bleed down. Just don't pry on the blue clip. I have a Reg cap 05 and working room is kinda tight, changing the filter.

 

Yea now that you say that motown, it was tight. I think I had to undo a bolt that holds the filter to the frame, and the fuel lines where still a mother.

 

I don't buy repair parts at Advance either, but things like filters and elements they stock Motorcraft OE, Purolator Premium, Purolator, and Fram .... in addition to off name. Exact sparkplug you are looking for, etc

Yep - no tools needed on my 05 either. But it was a PITA to get the d%#n filter out of it's bracket. The flexible lines are so short, they don't easily bend enough to slip one off. Would have been much nicer if the bracket split open so you could slide the fliter right out, but that's life. I unbolted the bracket to give me as much flex as I could, and it was still a fight.

To drain fuel pressure, start the truck, and pull the fuse for the fuel pump while it is running. It will die in a second or 2 relieving pressure. I've also done this by disconnecting the fuel pump impact/cutoff switch or just giving it a thump with your fist to pop it out. Whatever suits you. Still a lot of fuel will spill out as you disconnect the filter, but it won't spray like mad. Just have a couple cups or small pan to catch it.
