Question 4.0L V6 gas mileage??

What is everyone getting with their rangers? Mine is a '94 2wheel drive with 127,000 miles on it. Its getting about 17 mpg straigh highway driving @ 65-70 mph and about 14-16 in the city. Is this about normal for these trucks?

I'm getting 22.5mpg. That's over a total of 9000 miles and 431 gallons. Highway, small city, large city driving. 1999 Ford Ranger XLT Super Cab 2D Automatic, V6 3.0L Flex Fuel, Drivetrain: 2WD, Mileage: 138000, Condition: Good fully documented

I normally get 17/18 with my mix of driving ... my "lifetime" average with this truck is 18.2 MPG. Mine is a 2005 FX4 SuperCab 4.0L w/ 37k miles.

4.0L Ranger's don't get spectacular mileage, considering my last F-150 5.4L FX4 SuperCrew averaged 14/15 MPG.

this figure will vary with vehicle weight, set up and gearing. that being said my '93 supercab 4x with 3.73's weighing 4,300 pounds will get 19.5 highway at best, 17-18 most of the time combined, 15-ish in town and around 13-14 towing my 1,000 pound (empty) 6x10 box trailer. sure the 4cyl gets better fuel milage, but it cant hold a candle to the tourque of a 4.0 , oddly enough ive heard of exploders with the 4.0 getting low 20's mpg. dont know if its the 3.55 gearing in them or just lower weight. they aint any more areodynamic than the ranger.

That is fairly normal. The trucks are geared more for towing and heavy hauling, while many explorers get a more fuel efficient gearing. The 4 cyl lacks the torque, but if you rarely haul heavy stuff and you get it with the manual trans, it can do really quite well. Still nowhere in the same performance league as a V6, but it can serve as a truck nonetheless. Especially that new 2.5L

My '05 2wd has 209,000 and my average hwy is around 20. I usually get 400 miles out of a full tank if i stay within speed limits.

I have experimented greatly with how I drive and what my gas mileage is.

I have topped off the tank and driven no faster than 50 mph with slow acceleration for the whole tank.

AND...I have topped off tank and drive "like a mad-man" for the whole tank. When comparing mileage, there is never any more that 1 mpg difference.

I have done this a few times.

My 96 4.0L Ext Cab 4x4 was getting right at 19 on the highway. That is with 31" tires , a 5 spd , 3.73 gears , K&N Cold Air Intake kit , and 215,000 on it. Traded it in straight across for my 2000 F150 4x4 super cab. I got tired of the small cab space. Sure did like it though!

Something that could make a difference is my truck is 5 speed stick with leer cover, don't know? I live in Central KY and yes, I drive A LOT with my work and I can tell a definite difference in speed versus terrain and the brand's of fuel I use. I drive enough that I carry studded snow tires "just in case" and since they are bigger 15 tires, you can watch the gas hand drop with those on. I don't consider this an exceptional vehicle by no means, just sharing my experience.

94 SC 4.0, 2wd man trans, get around 20 on highway, have gotten better, do get better around 65-70 than I do at posted speed (75)but is only about 1mpg. Tried the tailgate off, made at the most 3-4 miles per TANK so leave it on. I get around 15-16 in town BTW.

I just had the injectors cleaned and the milage has dropped a little, 2 were clogged pretty well so vehicle was running a little lean seem to be in the 19+ range now. 145 miles RT daily 274000 miles indicated.

Yes a bed cover does help for highway. Knew a guy with a PSD who put one on and it helped him, my son in law put one on his 07 f150 and said he has gotten 1-1.5 mpg improvement. It is a soft one.
