I think you're taking this the wrong way. I am not doubting anything you are saying here, just looking for some detail on what "blowing up" an engine entailed for you.

I had an '86 GMC van in which I blew up a 305 engine at 42k. On the freeway driving 75, got some bad shaking and vibration, and pulled it over to the side of the road. The svc manager at the dealer that it got towed to (in Ohio, about 250 miles from home), got GM to pay half the price of a new engine even though I had bought it used. Apparently the timing chain went, valves hit pistons, and cut off the oil pump which messed up the lower end. Whole new long block engine. Chevy small blocks are NOT supposed to blow up like this either.

Next van was a '96 GMC Savana, first year model. (My late stepdad was a GM retiree and I got employee discounts.) This was the Van from Hell. I bought an extended warranty (thank God) to 60k miles. The warranty paid for two starters, an alternator, two fuel pumps, a bunch of electronic stuff, three transmissions, and SEVEN valve bodies. Also 4 or 5 oxygen sensors and a bunch of body-related issues. At 65k, after the warranty, the Dex Cool antifreeze dissolved the intake manifold gaskets, fortunately did not hydrolock and kill the engine. And after a LOT of letter writing and phone calling on my part, GM paid half. I always sell my used vehicles, but traded this one in because I simply could not look someone in the eye and let them buy it from me. It was literally breaking down at least once a month....pffft. Warranty probably saved me $10-15 grand in repair costs. Done with GM, and stepdad passed away in 2000, so no more discounts anyway.

Replaced that with my '02 Ford E150, again with an extended warranty. Warranty got me new cylinder heads ($4000 plus), new ball joints and tie rod ends at about 55k miles, and a few oil seals. Van now has 69k miles on it. Needed new front rotors and pads at 42k miles (on my dime) and the front rotors are warped again....but all of my big vans ate brakes.

Sounds like your major error was not buying an extended warranty...and getting any big vehicle with a lot of power crap on it is just asking for trouble. Yeah, my wife likes heated seats, but she gets cloth seats and nice down coats instead. I have bought extended warranties on probably 7 or 8 cars by now, and all except one have more than paid for themselves. (Exception was my wife's beloved '98 Sable with a Duratec.)

And no, I'm not blaming you for blowing up engines, really. Your first post just sounded like a "drive by" with very little detail, but I'll believe ya and it's all good...except for busted cars/trucks.

George
