Forget the 56 and stick with the 78/79 but give a factory option for square or round head lights.
Like I said before thou Ford and the other American auto makers have lost the fun factor and now car and truck building can only be very serious business, please no *SMILING*.
If we see any happy workers they will have to be dealt with in a serious manner LOL.
Rick.
I mention the 50's vintage ONLY because of the body style and customizing possibilities.
I don't know why you guys are stuck on the 78/79's they weren't impressive enough to justify a retro. My dad had a '76 F-150, 360 V-8, same truck different grill. It was a great truck, very capable but definately not a truck that I feel any sentiment over. Plus, the 360 was not one of Ford's shining moments. The truck came from the factory with auto hubs. I believe Ford dubbed it as a part time / full time system. If memory serves me correctly, the truck had a 4 speed transfer case. 2 HI -4 HI, 2 LO and 4 LO. C6 auto tranny. The transfer case was very cumbersome with a zigzag engagement pattern. The highlight was the truck was like an ant. It could work like no 1/2 ton I've ever seen. Still, not worthy of a retro.
Set me straight if my facts are not correct.

One of the most posted to and viewed segments of this website is the 1973 to 1979 chapter.
You site the 360 engine as an example but the 73 to 79 f100 f150 and the 78/79 Big Bronco came with many different trim levels and drive train options.
And if you visit any of the car and truck shows it is the fastest growing Ford truck segment.
As a matter of fact their are still literally thousands and thousands of these trucks still running the roads of Canada and the USA working as trucks not trailer queens that only occasionally drive around under their own power.
The 1973 to 1979 is the working mans truck and can out work, out haul, out pull, out run, and out stop any 1956 ford truck factory stock.

I agree with Red Ford Truck. There is something about the '78-79 trucks (and the then-new big Bronco), in particular, that was and continues to be very appealing and "truck like".
By 1978, the 360 was gone; engines available were the 300 inch six, the 302, the 351, the 400M, and the 460.
But if they reintroduced this body style as a retro flashback, it would, just like the "retro" Mustang, use modern drivetrain, emissions, and safety equipment. Getting "too" retro, like the 50's trucks, might create something like the PT Cruiser/HHR phenom. Really cool for the first year or so, then people get a bit sick of looking at them.
I also like the size of that series truck; the bed height on the new F150's is kind of ridiculous for those who actually use trucks.

Gentlemen, don't get me wrong here. I never said the 50's vintage trucks were work horses. I agree that the 73-79 vintage trucks are nice trucks, I was simply reffering to a TOY. A play thing.
Why would you want to build a retro truck if there are so many still in service? That generation of trucks definately out number the 2+2 mustangs that the current generation of Mustang was built to honor.
As I said, my dad's '76 was a great truck, but a retro of that vintage? Hmm, I'm not feelin' it. The truck market is very crowded, I just don't see where it would fit. Besides, the value of this vintage is it's simplicity. It's easy to work on, parts are cheap and interchangeable.
Nothing is prettier than a properly and fully restored vehicle. IMO, the new retro's have nothing on thier original siblings.
Unlace your gloves fellas, not lookin for a fight. Just my opinion.

OK this si my view on the subject.
i know ur talkin bout retro trucks and what-not ATM
but what ford needs to do, they are starting to do.
Bring over the European line. Focus, Mondeo, Fiesta, etc. and get this.dont make them into american couches. yes, add cup-holders, and americanize the Hvac controls. but really, thats about it. And for the love of god, Keep Hatches coming. the whole truck side of things... they need to lower the prices, and factor in on Reliability. let it go 300K on the stock motor. out-do the jap-crap thats coming in rt now. and they should do fine.

No fight Tim, and where it would fit in is taking the whole truck thing back to basics.
Now I think with the exception of Wendel we all think the ranger needs to be replaced/updated.
I think a retro 70's truck would be perfect great body style lower priced basic model with reasonably priced factory add ons.
Instead of throwing in Nav and expensive creature comforts wire it for all options and let the buyer easily install them at their will and budget.
Go with bench seats and really go nuts with the paint and decals like in the 70's have some fun with it.
Do yourself a favor and have a look at some of the old brochures of the 73/79 Ford trucks they are great.
Ideally if you bought a 73/79 Ford pick up in the 70's you were not just buying a truck you were buying a lifestyle, that can't be said of the 50's trucks then or now.
Not fighting just saying.
Rick.

Agreed my friend. Now since you put it like that, I agree with adding the F-100 to the line-up and implementing the whole '70's era appeal. I didn't even consider in that respect. Thanks for the point of view. I can be a little thick sometimes.

And tell him to get right on that.
I'll need one in three years because we'll be finished with the Ranger.
BTW I would never consider you to be thick, opinionated( in a good way), thoughtful and fair maybe (qualities I myself sometimes lack) but not thick.
Rick.

Your being too hard on yourself Rick. This little thread that you started has brought about some of the most stimulating discussion that I've enjoyed and is now on what, 14 pages? I think you did well. Let's get a conference call set-up.
You know my '88 is a very similar platform tot he '70's trucks with some differences. My particular truck is a basic truck with roll down windows, manual locks, manual shift and manual locking hubs. I find it quite appealing to have something that doesn't nickle and dime me to death.

There's a picture of the truck before the paint and body.
When I first had it on the road after the wheels and fancy paint job I used to get freaked out because I always thought people were staring at me then I would realized they weren't even looking at me they were admiring the truck, at least I learned why when you're looking at a good looking vehicle and make eye contact with the driver why they sometimes look angry LOL.
It's all about perspective and perception.
Rick.

OK, I'm probably gonna get really flamed for this...., but, if we're going retro, I really liked the way back when (70's?) DODGE "Lil Red Wagon". It really stood out. Course it couldn't hold a candle to my '350 performance wise, but as a toy.......The one I saw had the light maple side racks, really did resemble the Radio Flyer. As I recall, had chrome stacks.....
