Carburator explosion - Y block 239

I have had my 239 Y block fully rebuilt and when we decided to start it up for the first time, it first didn't start by itself but we had to pull it. That was my first problem. Then, once it started, we've heard like iregular explosions in the carburator. We don't know why this happened. Would someone have ideas of the possible reason of this problem?
Thanks
Roys

Roys,

First thing I would check is the firing order and static ignition timing.

Rule of thumb I always follow... If a engine doesn't start with the starter, you got a problem. Towing it isn't going to help!!

It sounds like your ignition is 180 degrees out.

pfogle,

I was going to suggest that also, but he stated that "it started" ???

Regular explosions through the carb could indicate a stuck valve. Pull the rocker covers and check. Also follow the suggestions other posters made.
