Knocking Noise-Crappy Service

It's been a long time since I posted on this site. Main reason being I purchased a different vehicle about 2 years ago and thankfully made my way back to the best vehicle available. With that said, I have run into some trouble.

I have been hearing a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. I noticed it early last week and let it go. After restarting the engine, it seemed to go away. As the truck ran for about 30-45 minutes, it would come back. I took it to the dealer and the service guy told me it was the s-cam phases, give him a day and it would be clear. I called the next day and they needed a replacement part for something they took off and it wouldn't be in until the following day. I went back on Saturday and to no surprise, truck still isn't ready. They are now ordering tension clips for the truck.

I was told this was an easy fix and would only take a day at most. Has anyone else heard this noise or ran into the same problem? The service guy won't communicate at all with me. I am beginning to wonder if they aren't just replacing parts and working on my truck so that they can bill Ford for the warranty work.

Any thoughts? Great to be back in a Ford and posting on this great site again!

I would ask to talk to the service manager or to the tech that is working on your truck. Most service writers at most dealerships are useless.

It sounds like they are replacing the cam phasers? If so, that ain't an easy fix. Pretty much have to take the engine apart to do that. Definitely talk to the service manager and get the 411.

I always know I'm at a dealers mercy when I start to hear this stuff. The whole steering system went on a brand new Toyota wagon I had in 89. I told them "just take your time, fix it right, and call me when it's done." I always feel uneasy about rushing them or pressuring them when it's a big job. They actually had to get the parts from Japan, and fly a mechanic here from Japan to fix it because it was such special stuff. The Japanese mechanic showed these guys how to change out the steering rack in those new AWD models at the time. That was about 1300 miles. I sold that car at about 137,000 not another repair.

I can do phasers in 4 hours. Maybe they found a bad roller follower or cam lobe and had to order a cam. Been there, done that.
