Rear diff problem.

The trucks a 93 F-150 with 67,000 miles on it. I kick around with
6,500 pounds on his back on a regular basis.(3 or more times a week) I think the diff is a Dana 44 but I've not crawled under to
I.D. it yet.
When shifting from park to drive I get the same fealing as a
warn u-joint, or an high idleing engine. MT or loaded. At light
acceleration I can hear an instant click sound.
Had a flat on the rr while loaded. When I finally got the truck
in the air, I could feal a lot of play in the axle area when
pulling on the drum. I could also hear the click sound.
What the heck is is it? Can it be repaired? Don't worry about
it? Or get a whole new diff.
The milage is correct and the service has always been well main-
tained and documented.
Thanks to any and all who reply.

Rear diff problem.

I have an older truck ('85)with the same problem. I don't know what brand axle it is other than it is an 8.8 with 3.55's. The U-joints are good but I had my wife put it in drive while I looked under and I could see what looked to be a good amount of play in the rear diff. Someone mentioned that you don't want more than 1/8th of a turn when putting it into drive. I haven't checked to see just how far it's turning. I have quite a bit of mileage on mine and my belief is that it has to much play.

I was going to swap it out with a nice LS diff. but if that turns out to be to much I'll take it in and have it readjusted.

So you are saying the play in it is adjustable? Well that gives me some idea of where I have to start at.
Thank you.
