2001 f-250 ESOF
Recently bought my first Ford. Love it! One problem the 4x4 does not work. Its a 2001 F250 5.4l with 52,000 miles. I did alot of searching on here and have found some information. I hate to ask the same old questions, but here it goes...
When turning the switch to 4x4hi nothing happens. No light, no engagement of the transfer case. The switch is good as I checked for the specified resistance. I am getting just about 11 volts to the switch. So I figure that is all good. I hit on the solenoid on the transfer case and still nothing. All fuses are good. I replaced the relays next to the fuse panel under the hood. Nothing changed. What else should I look towards? I read about the 4x4 module, where is it located? Would it cause this problem? Could it be the motor on the transfer case? When turning the switch where should I be getting power on the transfer case motor? Any and all help or wiring diagrams are greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!! Josh

Get a test light and hook it to the two pins in the connector that goes to the shift motor.
You should get voltage when you turn the switch from 4x2 to 4x4, and back, with the engine running.
It should only be there for 5-10 seconds so you really need someone else to turn the switch while you're under there holding the test light to the connector
Report back if you get voltage or not, and we'll work with you to figure it out.

I'am a new member, I do not want to interfere with your problem but I'am having the same issue. I have replaced the Power control module, Motor at transfer case works, switch on dash works, can switch to 4 x4 by using test light at relay ( one end on ground other end to engage and disengage)Can not get power at control module need wioring diagram please. I think that it is a wiring or grounding problem

the esof system uses vaccuum to lock in the hubs. if a vacuum line is off or there is a vacuum leak somewhere, the hubs wont lock, or one wont lock and the selenoid in the transfer case wont lock in the 4wd. so check all ur vacuum lines. also, there is a test you can do to test the vacuum selenoid. it deals with which vents are working at what times, but i cant remember how to do it. there is also, a relay or fuse somewhere under that dash that people have had go bad. one guy also had the selenoid in the transfer case go bad.
