My dad has always been partial to fords. All he could ever buy was what he could afford (he was a poor farmer and still is haha). One of the best trucks I remember him telling me about was a 68 dodge with the slant six he got for $75. It was ugly as hell but never let him down. He got another ford when he could and always will given the chance (as long as you dont count our Deuce and a Half 6x6 which was built by Kaiser-awesome truck btw). Sometimes you do what you have to do. This all happened long before I was born- when the tractor broke he used our draft horses, when the manure spreader broke he cleaned the barn by hand and then shoveled the crap out by hand in the field. I will never be a 1/4 of the man my father is and I hope I can help enough someday so he doesn't work himslef to death. Does that make him less of a man because he wasnt driving a ford at the time? I think not.
nope. that makes him more of a man, because he will do whatever he has to do to keep his family fed, clothed, and together as a family in a warm house .

Some thing SOME people apparently don't understand. THE MAN MAKES THE TRUCK. Case in point, most of us idolize our fathers and in most cases our fathers drove Fords when we were growing up. That doesn't mean someones not a man for buying something else because he can afford it and desperately needs a work truck. I'd like to know what that kids father would think of him if he knew what his kid was saying about "real men".

not mine. mom and dad drove whatever ran.
dad drove a 49 international R-190 single axle tractor. he had no need for a truck AND a pickup.
mom drove a 51 chevy with a bad trans.
when the trans finally went, my uncle gave us a 57 chevy 4 dr sedan with a 6 cylinder and a 3 on the tree with 95,000 miles on it. in 66 dad saved up enough money to buy a dealer demo 65 town and country wagon with 15k miles on it. 352 and an automatic, with air conditioning.
they drove the wheels off that car, and replaced it in 75 with a dealer demo granada.
dad drove that 49 international till mom got a new car in 85, when he took over the granada. they were 55 years old when they bought their first new car.
i thought i was hot snot back in 73, cause i bought a pickup that was 17 years newer than that old international dad drove every day. and that was a 66 W-300 power wagon. one hell of a truck. they simply don't make truck like that anymore.

Kinda the point of my first post but ok I guess I got a little off the point when I said most of them drove Fords but your right. The first car I remember in our family was a Olds 88. And to be even more accurate the first truck I remember dad driving was actually a '75 F-700 with a 15' flatbed and a 360. He drove that for a brief time untill the '78 F-150 came along. The only reason I remember the F-700 is 'cause its still on the farm, its used for picking stones and hauling whatever else around the property. I guess were not real men though 'cause we drove "other" brands at some point and in some cases still are.

Dad always had Fords and that was passed on to me. Wife and I always had a Ford and a Mercury except for a Chevy Citation we made the mistake of buying new
I Couldn't call Ford a curse, mine have all been a blessing !
I've known people who have had very good Chevys through the years, though, but it does seem to me that GM has made more lemons then Ford has, though, some of you might be to young to remember these:
The Chevy Vega, they rusted and the aluminum engines were junk
GM 5.7 diesels
Those Caddy 4100 engines
Caddy V8-6-4s in the early 80s
Early Chevy 305s with "soft" cams
GM "X" cars: Chevy Citation, Olds Omega, Buick Skylark, the most recalled cars of all time
I can't think of any Ford product offhand that had a rep like these turds did.

Dont worry, ford countered with the pinto, comet, maverick, mustang2, fairmont, futura, 1st gen escort, tempo, topaz, exp, 1st gen taurus, courier, 1st gen ranger, fox body mustang, 1st gen of the new thunderbird and of course the last thunderbird, contour, mystique....
and managed to fill them with the 2L pinto engine, 2.3 HSC, 2.3 turbo, 1.6L kent, 1.9 carbed escort engine, 2.8v6, 2.9v6*, 3.8v6, 255v8, 4.6v8 and 5.4v8 and backed them up with FMX trannies, 4EAT-ME trannies, 1st gen E4OD and the grandaddy of them all historically: the AXOD/E/AX4S tranny, the only piece of modern car lore to face mandatory action by the NHTSA
And finally the $5 culprit that sent more trucks and vans to the boneyards via fires, than crashes: the ignition switch.
Quote:
Though well behind General Motors in production and sales of cars and trucks (GM's 25.4 million to Ford's 17.3 million), since 1990 Ford has led the industry, in raw numbers and when market-share is considered, in:
• the number of vehicles recalled for all types of fire related problems;
• the number of vehicles recalled for electrical fires;
• the number of fire related defect investigations;
• the number of fire related public complaints to NHTSA.
* = special note: the 2.9 was so bad, you are charged extra if you return one as a core to a rebuilder.
My old man bought a new Dodge Cummins in 1991. I think that I loved that truck as much as he did (I was 9). After that I have always wanted a Cummins of my own. I bought a new one in '04. I love my Cummins. Is the rest of the truck the best? Maybe not, but the drivetrain hasn't let me down. Dad also had a '93 Ford F250 diesel, it was the biggest POS and I swore that I would never have one. I just bought a 2000 7.3 PSD Excursion. I realized that all makers have trouble with their vehicles at one time or another and it's just dumb to think that Ford or Dodge or Chevy is head and shoulders above the rest. They all have good and bad.
I agree with you. We even had a f-350 7.3IDI non turbo deisel dump truck. That thing is still running strong! I love the Cummins and the dodge for that matter. Quaddriver we had a tempo that ran forever. My father is a mechanic and never touched the thing. My buddy had an escort that ran good for a long time two. My friend had a citation that you could shift without the clutch. That thing was a turd. Then there was my beloved 86cavalier with a 2.???? it had an aluminum head. That car got me through a blizzard here with bald front tires! One of my favorite cars. I paid 300 for it. I see what everyone is saying there are turds in every stable!!
Hey Bill you have my simpathy for have that ankle biting virgin tryin to sound like he has a pare
Anyway on topic I have this friend he has a chevy 1500 v8 2wd like mine so a even comparison let me drive it put it this way wouldnt want one to much overstear, rides like a car I'll give em that, But I like a firmer ride than that, there brakes are mushey and they arn't roomy on the inside. just to name a few.
