I'm thinking maybe a ring is broken, because oil got all over the compression tester fitting.

I'm thinking maybe I can just drop the oil pan, carefully remove the rod cap and push the piston/rod out through the top of the motor, re-ring it and put it back together. Maybe it will run good for another year or so. That seems like my cheapest option right now.

It sounds like a good plan. If there is much of a wear ring at top you may have to grind that down. Sometimes the rings are stuck and it isnt required. Most auto stores loan or rent the grinder for not much, if it is necessary. Dont get carried away and remove an excess amount of material, and try to get as much debris out as possible. What size rings do you need. I have some cast .060 OS on hand.

Not sure which rings I need. Stock ones I guess. I don't think the motor has ever been bored out.

There is about a .030" lip at the top of the cylinder (same as the others), and a small scuf mark on the cylinder wall. You can barely feel it. I guess I can hone the cylinder and take care of that.
