Having had 2 Escapes so far I really like them. I don't keep them more than 5 years and don't pile alot of miles on them but have driven mine pretty hard. No issues to speak of really. However I might think twice on this new trans until they have been out for a year. While Redranger is having a heck of a time there don't seem to be any other complaints. You might consider a leftover 08 which will put you back with the 4 speed auto.

we bought a new 2008 Escape in April for my wife Heather. She loves it! no problems so far, it's great on gas (2.4 litre 4 cyl.) and Heather had a1 litre 3cyl. pontiac firefly prior to buying her the Escape,so it was hard to find an suv that would be good on gas to replace her firefly.i believe the Escape was a good choice. it snowed 6 inches here this week, and the Escape is great in the snow. Heather feels really safe driving it. i would recommend an Escape to my family or friends based on our experience. i drive a 1974 f350 dually 4x4 with a 428 horsepower ,428 super cobra jet engine. my daily driver is a 2001 ranger super cab 4x4, so for me to actually like the little Escape suv is a big deal. i tried not liking it, but it won my heart over pretty quick. since we bought it now Heather is becoming a "gearhead" like me. lol. we have no regrets buying it.-billy

i do notice a lot of the large companies fleet vehicles are Escapes. Hilti tools, dept of highways, terasen gas (the gas company out here in B.C.) CP rail, telus phone company. so that seems good too.

I don't know how concerned you should be that one member on this board has had trouble with the 6-speed auto in his Escape. Both my parents and I have 2009 V6 6-speed 4WD Escapes and have had no troubles. I think the vehicle is a tremendous improvement over my 2002 Tribute.

MBF,
I'm the one with the bad tranny, don't be afraid to purchase an '09 because of my troubles, it was just luck of the draw, I got a bad one and Ford is working with me to correct this misfortune.

I would certainly buy another .

Just because there's one bad apple, you don't throw out the whole basket. I would have rather had an 09 with the 6 speed, but there's was 5,000.00$ worth of rebates on the 08 mariner, I couldn't pass that up. Ford will be a round for a long, long time, they didn't even need to take the bailout money. Alan as a plan in motion and it's working. The slowing economy just set them back a bit, but it's still full steam a head. I believe chrysler will be the only one to eventually go down. The goverment won't let the other 2 fail. It comes to a point of national security for war time production if nothing else. Ford is in the best shape of the 3 and is moving forward under Alans leadership. I just bought 2 new fords, I'm not worried and it helps secure fords future. If you buy a new ford you will have helped as well. I had an 01 escape and now the 08 mariner, there one sweet safe, comfortable and capable suv, perfect for a family. My mariner 4x4 with the V-6 gets 20.6 mpg city and 25 highway and it isn't even broke in yet, so there also afordable.

The '09 Escapes have roll stability control, lots of airbags, etc. Should be a fairly safe vehicle.
