does anyone have any experience with studs? How much improvement can one expect with as apposed to without? Ive got brand new firestone wilderness at's on my 77 now. last year we moved to a new town with lots of very steep hills. I was driving up one after a snowfall but could only get about half way up and had to go down backwards without touching the brake couldnt even feather it without causing the rig to skid off the side of the cliff.(35mph from top of hill to bottom without touching brake) Ive heard/read that the only noticeable improvement is on ice.
Info and/or experience appreciated. thanx

Studded tires are a benefit to driving on asphalt/concrete roads covered with ice and packed snow.
They make no real difference on any thing else like gravel, dirt, grass etc.
Some states/provinces Ban the use of studded tires because they chew up the roads.

I always liked mine on my car.

up here in AK they're almost a must. Studded tires make a big difference. Especially on packed snow (which it sounds like you are talking about). You'll be happy you got the studs once you see the difference.

I'm in Eagle River, just outside Anchorage, and enjoying the snow without my studs. Gotta love those donuts and spin outs!!!
