Jammed seatbelt retractor

Is there a trick to removing the plastic cover on the retractor? I can't feel any fasteners, but the thing won't budge. I don't want to break it - any help would be appreciated.

If I remember correctly. There is a plastic tab on either side. You have to kind of push down while you pull outward on both sides of the cover. Then fish out what ever was dropped into it.
Good Luck

just unbolt them from the truck. thats what i did, i dont wear seatbelts. the thing is a 40 year old hunk of steel with no airbags, crumple design, or anything of that sort, so the only thing wearing a lap belt will do is keep you in one place if you roll. your face is still hitting the steering wheel or windshield either way, specially if its not completely tight on your waist the way its supposed to be. and a seatbelt ticket is nothing more than a sad new invention of nickleing and diming people because taxes just arent enough.

Mcdobson, Marks69 and Danger_Dave,

Thanks for your replies. I've kinda set this problem on the back burner for now, as we're having record low temperatures in Vancouver right now. Too darn cold to work outside on the truck (I don't have a garage!) I'll have a look again when it warms up a bit.

Danger_Dave - I agree with you in principle, but the cops up here charge over $100 for not wearing a seatbelt. More than I can afford.

Thanks again for the help,

zenmaster

in sw ontario i'm in the same boat. went from -7c to 9c to -9 in 24 hours. i went out to change a plug and didn't get it done. was pouring rain, then about 5 minutes later it was ice pellets.
i need a new house with a larger garage. when i lived on the island i was swimming in the ocean on dec 21, back in the early 90's. then dec 24 i put a new motor in my car, loaded it and headed for the ferry. raced a storm all the way across the country.

In 1963, a drunk woman in a 1957 Plymouth ragtop ran into me while I was stopped at a red light.

She was traveling at an estimated 90 MPH and had 7 kids in her car, none were wearing seat belts.

If I hadn't been wearing a LAP seat belt (which I installed in my '54 Olds), I would have ended up like three of the kids did...propelled thru the windshield.

The carnage was an awful sight, I hope I never see it again.

And...I did not hit the steering wheel or the windshield.

Seat belts became standard equipment in 1967 on trucks.

Lap belts were standard, shoulder harnesses were optional beginning in 1968.

NumberDummy, Quman, dgrant09,

Thanks for the tips! I will try and fix it first, but if its beyond repair I'll try and find a used OEM.

With the weather here, it looks like it will be Spring before I will get to it.

BTW, my '77 has an integral shoulder and lap belt. Can these be retro-fitted to my '72?

I actually have become used to wearing the shoulder strap over the last 6 years...

Plus, once the cop runs your license and sees you have an outstanding ticket from a wonderful speed camera here in Arizona and your license has been suspended and then impounds your truck, And you get to meet sheriff Joe and pink undies..... ECT... you get the idea...

Wear the belt......Here they will pull you over even in a vehicle not requiring them. They figure normal persons don't have the time off and such to fight it and will just pay it.

I am kinda curious about the Lap belt to shoulder harness conversion for my 71 but I don't know how difucult that would be... Right now my lap belts don't work on mine... Thank god they are not required in my state on a vehicle this old... Plus I live on a small island and the cops know me... but still if I ever wanted to take this truck down the freeway i would want shoulder harness for it...
