When iron (steel) oxidizes the oxidized layer flakes and does not protect the metal, which is why exposed iron will rust rapidly.

Aluminum, on other hand, acts completely different. A thin layer of oxidation will form on it and that layer actually inhibits further oxidation. Aluminum oxide is a pretty robust bond, verses iron oxide. Take for example a 30 year old motorcycle with an aluminum engine case... it'll turn a nasty dull grey after a few years and then stay that way. It'll be decades before it actually oxidizes through.

Most aluminum corrosion on automobiles isn't from exposure, is from galvanic corrosion, beginning mostly where it comes in contact with dissimilar metals. The problem with autos is the sacrificial metal in the galvanic reaction tends to be the aluminum, verses the steel it touches. Coating the aluminum with zinc makes the the primary sacrificial metal the zinc. With steel, you coat it with zinc for a different reason (although part of the reason is to be sacrificial).... it gets a slight oxidized layer like aluminum which has a fairly good bond and inhibits further corrosion. If the aluminum is isolated from other metals and doesn't touch them it can pretty much last many decades unprotected.

Uncoated aluminum can get pitting if exposed to certain salts as well, but this is minor compared to steel oxidation.
Well said. The superstructures of Naval and Coast Guard ships are built primarily of aluminum and other alloys for strenght, weight reduction and corrosion resistance. Sacrificial zincs are installed thoughout the hull of the ship to attract rust before it has the opportunity to penetrate the hull. Same rules apply to automobiles as cost permits.

Some people are determined to get on here and talk smack about Ford. I just don't understand. Some people just can't be satisfied and some people just want to start crap.

Happy New Year!

Tim

Mine still does but I figured out how to fix it. Yeah, it is a PITA, even my shop knows that when it comes in there for anything, first thing they do is crank down on the rear adjusters. If they don't it will be back.

I totally agree. Politics belong in the "Club!"

Response to ford bashing

I,m new to this site and been reading alot of the post and discoverd for myself there is a lot of ford bashing.I agree ford may have warrenty issues and some bad customer service at SOME dealer, but not all dealers are the same.I would like to add to the forum about some of my experiences with vehicles.Pretty much my entire family own fords except a small few.I owned a 98 buick century that had a few problems the Gm experts could not figure out and the people at the manufacturer could not figure it out even after telling them on the phone what was going on.The car kept overheating and would not idle right. In the end the car blew a head and I junked thar pos.My uncles Tacoma rusted through the frame. My sister had a 2001 Hyndai Tiburon that kept breakind down and each tome that thing broke,it would cost #400.00 or mor to fix the thing.A catilytic converted turned into a $700.00 repair. That was two car paments at the time.It broke down 5 times in one year.It got repoed eventually because my sister could not afford to keep fixing it and keep up with payment. She has 2005 Stratus now and it allright except is sucks in the snow.My 1994 Ford tempo drives better than that stratus and gets better mpg.I also own a 85 F-250 with the460 motor and it drives better and out tows any 80's 3/4 ton chevy except dodge because they use the cummins in the 80's.To this day that 460 motor run like a champ and starts up and idles like its supposed to in any temperature.I can't say that about to many chevy's of the 80's or later.I'm not trying to say Ford is the way to go,point being, there's good and bad in all makes and models.Vehicles are machanicle and elctronic and built by and I mean by men and weoman and in the end the vehicles will fail at one point or another. It all depends on your prefernce,as for me I like Ford.

It's ok to say ford is the way to go, this is a ford truck enthusaist site. What gets me is why people come on to a ford entuhsiast site to air thier dirty laundry about ford, like there going to get a lot of suport here. There basically going to get arguments. It seems there complaints would be more welcomed on a chevy foeum or something. I've had I would guess 40 fords during my life and never had a bad one, I've had some beaters, some abused and even some junkers, but even they were good for what they were. My first vehicle was a 1950 p/u, flat head I-6, 3 speed on the floor. I paid a 150.00$ back in 74 when I was 14. My cuisin is still driving it today, he did a total restore on it. I dragged raced fords back in the 70's and early 80's, I have a few trophies. I tried boozing and criusing for a while, totaled a few fords, never was killed. Then I got into off/roading with fords and jeeps, I've allways had an old jeep around anyway. It's a hillbilly thing, you have to have a jeep beside the house if it runs or not. I wheeled a 74 bronco, 77 F-150, 79F-250, 84 bronco II, 87 F-150, 96 F-150, 98 f-150, 99 F-150, 01 super duty and 5 rangers. I have beat on and abused fords from the drag strip to the trails. I am here to say, "fords the best, screw the rest"!!!!

Agreed! The only thing that I've done to my trucks is put bigger tires on them. I've wheeled with the best and i've pulled many a Rovers, Toys, Chevies and the lot out of the woods and off the ruts. I've never broke anything doing it. Many of my former wheelin' buddies now own Fords. I don't wheel so much anymore as this area has grown so much over the past 20 years. I don't even have M / S tires on my truck anymore.

So what are you saying, I'm an idiot because I'm not on the forum everyday. That was about the time I didn't have a PC for a few months. "COOL", no more butt sucking. This kissing both is closed. Are we a loud to use the short term for japanese now? Why didn't you sell it to me, I needed a new hobby. I could make a list in 30 seconds of the first 20 I would boot off, me included, I wouldn't want to seem biased ha ha.

Lighten up man, no one said you were an idiot or implied anything like that. The posts were informational only, so you could look up the details of the announcement from about a year and a half ago. Its in the annoucements section.

If you're "butt sucking" that's your personal business.

Would you use the N word on FTE?

I think not.

To the Japanese, the term "jap" is as offensive to them as the N word is to African-Americans.
