I do not think the majority of people that buy superduty trucks do it on the basis of fuel savings...........
I want one largely because the loads i carry are simply to much for my F-150.
So I plan to buy an F-350 with V10 gassser.
I would agree the SD's mileage is usually secondary to function. However, for me my 01 f150 was a tad more truck than I actually needed, but my 94 B4000(Ranger) was not enough truck. However, after having the F150 I can't go back(and fortunately the wife really appreciates the extra room as well). When I bought the F150 more than one dealership tried to steer me into a SD. It was very tempting but it would've been a waste of a good truck. I would use the truck as a daily driver on weekdays- about 3/4 tank per week and toy(bikes, skis typically) hauler on weekends. The weekends are what killed me gas wise as I would put about 400 plus miles on it between Sat & Sun- A full tank for that trip.
The B4000 was stolen(had 200k on it) in 01- moved to the 01 F150. Then in Oct. 06 traded in the 01 in on the KR. The wife said I was crazy to trade-in right when I paid off the 01- It is so annoying when she is right. What a sweet truck that 06 was-but after 15+ warranty trips to the dealer in 21 months I had to get rid of it. Couldn't see buying a truck in June of 08 w/ the 09s right around the corner so I settled on a left-over 07 MKX- first non-truck I've ever owned and I must say while it is a very nice vehicle it's not a truck. And I've found that I actually need a truck. My BIL has a construction company and I have a choice of 3/4 ton, 1 ton or 5 ton flat bed when I NEED a truck but driving 60 miles round trip to get it is a bit inconvenient. The wife, bless her heart, said about 2 weeks after buying the MKX that she would probably be willing to take the MKX late next year so I can get back into a pick-up. The problem might be having to wait to see if/when the F100 will debut v. getting a 2010 F150.
This post has gotten so far away from the original topic, I bet no one remembers what the orginal topic was ha ha. These post can take on a life of there own. It's all good, there's been a lot of good discussion here and great information. Some times hijacking can be a good thing as we explore new area's.

2009 FORD RANGER fx4 off/road, 5-speed manual, torson diff and rancho's!
So I usually don't like to rant on about stuff but here's my tale of woe with Ford.
For years I was (note the tense) a loyal Ford owner. I've owned over the years -
-F100 truck (tranny went bad)
-Mercury Capri (head gasket, radiator, front end, brakes, driver seatback)
-Maverick (bad brakes, uni-body rot through)
-Ford Escort (came from dealer without cooling fan fuse, used 1qt oil every 3Kmiles)
-Ford Escort wagon (only Ford product we never had problems with)
-Ford Taurus (bad tranny, headlight problem, air conditioning compressor, brakes)
and the straw that broke the camels back
- 95' Windstar -(headgasket, tranny, air conditioning, rear wiper, door switch, vent motors......)
I swore I would NEVER own another FOMOCO product until Ford pays me the $6600 I lost on the Windstar...
And yet, here I am. I now own a used '01 Ranger with 32Kmiles on it. I bought it from my father in-law, who used it to plow his driveway and was selling his house. I needed one and despite my misgivings I went for it.
Now I find myself looking for "hard shifting and lack of 1st gear" on a vehicle that has less than 50K miles.
You can claim anything you want about your experience. Mine has been abysmal and Ford dealers (my wifes cousin sold us the bulk of our vehicles) are a load of s%%t. Ford cares only about the sale, and afterwards, you the consumer are left holding the bag. I have since bought only Japanese vehicles (Nissan, Toyota, Honda). They too have their issues (I wont buy Nissan anymore) but in general I have had fewer, less costly problems compared to Ford. Of course your mileage will vary.
Cars(trucks): A hole in the driveway into which you pour money.
..Yep I agree..Its all a Huge joke..I guess the western, and Northern and southern Snow storms that just ripped across america is from Global cooling..Al-Gore is the Biggest Idiot and theif this Nation has seen in a long time..Last I checked he still flies his private Jets. this statement is ludacrist , global warming is happening . its quite ovious. im no fan of al gore either . as for theiving i think our current administration has let theiving run wild . of course the dems are at fault . 50 bill just from one trader on wall street . all on rep watch , maybe one should be alittle more biased. 8 years of bush lies , thieving , and dictatorship . all i can say is hes a chip off the old block . of couse im talking about his old man than thank god only lasted one term . i guess thats why his wife got a book deal and not bush jr . 20 percent isnt woth selling a book ! i told 10 pages back this would turn into a rep vs dem thing
My opinion may have softened after repair experience.
(See Ranger Board for full details)
Problem found and corrected...............
Well as reported we went to the dealer we bought the Ranger from, completely different experience than the local Ford dealership(the ones who were rude and couldn't fix the problem).
My wife had the day off so she drove the 50 minutes to the dealership.
The service manager took a drive with her to experience the problem then they drove back to the dealership, he gave her a 2008 Escape and said not to worry they would find and fix the problem and give her a call when she could come back and get the truck.
Four hours later they called her, truck is fixed she can pick it up today open til 8pm or she can come tomorrow morning.
Problem was front tires had around ten pounds more air than rear tires and because it's a 4x4 driven mostly in 2 wheel drive the back tires wear more than the fronts, this caused the transfer case to wind up.
Wow 34,000 km or I guess 28,000 miles and a little bit of extra air in the tires caused this problem.
At the end of it all, learned a valuable bit of information or these Ranger4x4s and the dealerships, the local dealership called to do follow up on our experience with them. My wife told them they earned a solid fail as far as she was concerned, they didn't fix the problem and they treated us poorly, they said thank you very much for your opinion.
Cost at the good dealership was $0 worth the trip in the end for the repair and the next new vehicle in 2012.
Rick.

Sounds like you should have followed the old saying about fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I'd have left Ford or any other brand a lot sooner if every vehicle had that many problems.

HA HA, that was cute, liquid 1 gets the last rant in and then agree's to a truce, I liked that. I'm a republican as well and not a baby killer, but out of respect for Ken and the rules, we'll fight this battle at the voting boths. We'll get them next time!!
Rick I'm so glad you got the probelm worked out and found a good dealership in the process. I found out a long time ago it's important to have a good dealer. I have shopped the same dealership for allmost 20 years becuase of thier awesome deals, service and friendship. Between my wife and I, we have prchased 14 new vehicles from them, so it has paid off for them as well. It's a small town dealership and family owned.
It's HARRISON FORD/MERCURY in Wellington Ohio (I'll give them a plug) I'll stop in to see them just to say hi, and my sales lady allways greets me with a hug, she allways offers to have my vehicle washed while I'm there for free. When I stop, she allways gives me something, pens, coffee mugs, calander, caps, home made candy and cookie's, t-shirts, allways something. She calls often to check on our vehicles or to just say hi. Even the owner Rodney Harrison calls from time to time to make sure everything is all right in Wendells world. It's the small things that count. Even the service manager will give me a call or drop me a card when it's time for our oil changes, and I mostly change it myself, but they still do it. We've been together so long, I do most of my buying over the phone and just stop in to sign papers and pick up the vehicle. I even ordered my current ranger over the phone and they called me in 5 weeks when it was in. I didn't get an exact payment at the time because things change. From the time I ordered my truck untill it came in, interest rates had fallen and saved me 40 bucks on the payment a month.. I would buy fords reguardless, but it sure helps when you have an awesome dealer like Harrison's. They are in a farm comunity and sell more trucks than anything, trucks and horse trailors. Rodney is into horses, he even makes TV comercials with his horse Dusty. I enjoy doing business with them and even look forward to seeing them, thier like friends and family. I'm glad you have found such a dealership. Rick, I hope your still not as mad at ford now, there is some good ford folks if you look around. I have delt with some real loosers as well. Thats why now that I've found such a great dealership, I stick with them and them me. Being a small town, they survive from repeat buiness and service.

I still think it's a crying shame that we couldn't get good treatment at the local around the corner dealership and they should be very ashamed of that.
It is funny though we live about 3 minutes from a Chevy dealership and it was where I took my GMC company service van for repairs, they were cut from the same cloth as the local Ford dealerships nothing but problems.
I have heard more complaints about this dealership than you can shake a cat at.
It must be a larger town/big city dealer mentality with the small town dealer cherishing his or her cliental and the City dealerships believing that customers are like buses a new one will be along any minute now.
The thing that irked my wife and I was it was day before Christmas eve, we were going to be on the road in bad weather and this local dealership did little or nothing to help us out.
Happy New year to all.
Rick.

"O BOY", are you in trouble. For 1) you don't come on a ford enthusiast site and tell people to buy japanese, that can start a war with you at the center of it. 2) your not allowed to use the word jap on this forum, Ken finds it disrespectfull to the japanese people. I was shut down and kicked off for a couple of days for saying jap. 3) most of us here are loyal to ford and wouldn't hit a dog in the butt with a japanese vehicle. There's where the site gets it's name, "ford truck enthusiasts", not "japanese truck enthusiasts". Your playing with fire and could well get burnt. However, we thank you for your concern, but let it be noted that some of us would rather walk than buy japanese. Nothing against the japanese, it just we have a great selection of ford cars and trucks to choose from. If that fails we allways have GM and chrysler to stay in the american company family. Ford has provided for me my whole life with a good job for my father, great deals on thier quality vehicles, great medical as I was growing up, a pension for my dad and I still get X-plan. Japan has done nothing for me but take 2 of my uncles at peral harbor. The old saying goes, what have you done for me lately. Ford is still doing for our family. The only thing japan has done lately for us, is try and take our jobs and shut down the detroit 3. They have a woken the sleeping giant, ford has just begun to fight, it will be the battle of Midway all over again hee hee!!!!

Not defending Ford but you weren't very clear about the model years and mileage on your troubled autos. Were they bought new or used? I've had the exact opposite experience with my inventory of Fords. Mine were purchased new and used.
IMO, when you push snow with a Ranger, your setting the truck up to fail. I don't care if it's one driveway or ten. IMO, scrap the blade and the head gear, fix the tranny and drive it normal.
Tim
