ECR A heads

Recently I came by a set. They are very much like ECZ-Cs, but with thick stemmed (7/16 in.) sodium filled valves, factory installed hardened seats on the exhausts, and they are posted. The ECR-A must have been used in HD 292s. The current problem with them is a blown out area of cast around one of the threaded holes for the exhaust manifold, apparently due to a seized up bolt. Two people have said it could be built up with weld and surfaced down. We'll see.

JM gives info that have them made in 1956, but with the post for Combustion Chamber it would have been mid '57 or later. With the 1.78 intake, smaller intake runners, and stock 73 cc chambers they will be good replacements for my 113s. Surfacing of .036 will be poss. for chamber size of around 67cc. The machinist said installing guides for the regular type exhaust valves will be easy.

Just havin fun .

Hi Kevin, yes maybe. Who knows for sure. One thing about the old engines, they always can befuddle someone.

My 113's have been a compromise to driving habit, objectives, rpms, carburetor, transmission, rear end, you name it. Hope these work out and are rebuildable. I've been looking locally for a set of C's for longer than a 312 crank. The 312 came last year.

Mike

Mike, I'd be willing to trade a pair of ECZ-C heads for pair of good 113 heads. Did your 113 heads have word done on them?

Paul, the set of 113 has had so much work done I cant afford to get rid of them. Milled .036 on deck side and .046 on intake side. 16 hardened seats. New valves, springs and one piece keepers. 66cc chambers. One chamber is heavily pitted from water sitting in it a decade or more during it's residence at the junkyard. Also should save them for the 318 planned for the far future.

The ecr a set is in the shop for cleaning and mag, so the journey has started.

Mike

I am putting a ecr industrial 272 in my 56 f100 and bolted it in Thursday. I was going to go look for a 312 and still might. They are hard to come by.
I figure if this 272 pulled a 10,000 lb truck around town--it should haul a 56f100 around ok. I want to put a 2100/2300 series carb on it though. I do not like the teapot carb--who does yblock engine builds in N.E. Ohio /w.Pa. area? I could give someone alot of work if they want it. Bill

Bill, I cant think of anyone in Ohio building Y blocks, good luck on finding someone who knows anything about Y's locally. This is why FTE is so great.

Bill, if you end up needing replacement exhaust valves that are sodium filled, it looks like I will have 4 or more that are good candidates. Someone told me they are in the area of $40 or more new!, but I'm not that greedy.

Kevin, Walford, or anyone else: do you know what the heavy bracket mounted to the PS of the timing cover on one of these engines was for...air brakes, hydraulic pump...?

Mike, Its had to say after all these years if it was factory or user installed. I have never owned one with air brakes, and the power steer pump went on the drivers side.

46yblock/--Bigwin----thanks -I heard there is a guy near Cleveland that specializes in yblocks and saw his ad in CRUISIN TIMES magazine,or Bob from Bob's stainless bolt co. told me.
I had a fire truck F700 I think, and I cannot remember if it had air brakes. I do not think so. Lot of extra equipment bolted on the engine though....gettin old and cannot remember. haha!!
Bigwin--you are happy -I bet, you are doing great on ebay!! haha!!
I still need a driveshaft for a 272 yblock with a 4SPEED now, and 110'' 56F100.
If I need some valves,Mike--I will pm you.--thanks
Bill

I'm sure they will do you fine, If you can get out of there for under $2000 for a quality rebuild I say go for it!

Looks like your Y block days are numbered then. Sorry to hear that .

Doing heads alone is $500.00 OR MORE!

The word here is QUALITY, and thats why I'm not interested in doing Y blocks for anyone but myself. I',m not going to cut corners on engine building.
