What makes for the HD Y?

What sould I externaly look for to know if my spare '60 F550 block is an HD?
Its 2 bbl, and looks identical to the one in my '64 F100.

I know the HD blocks had forged cranks, stouter rods, and sodium filled E-valves. Where sould I look for a casting NO:? Do I have to pop the oil pan?

The HD blocks had steel cranks AFTER 60 starting with the 1961 models C1TE part number.

HD engines had differences in earlier years such as a larger oil pan, high fan mount with usually a 5 blade fan, governor, and yes you are correct on the heads with sodium filled valves.

You can compare the crankshaft flange at the rear to these diagrams supplied by J. Mummert: TECHNICAL

I am working on my 56 yblock which is listed as ''industrial'' and has larger oil pan and also governor. It is from a 56F600 caterpillar owned truck.

well if you aske me, you can take a look at the heads, it's easy to see if it's a bigger one.
The exaust flange boltz are not in on line on the bigger lincoln engines, on the smaller y-block ford they are in one line.

@ waldorfs 56

What is that high fan meaning?
And where should this governor be?

He is talking about differences between the MD and HD 292. The Lincoln Y is different again.

Hi Arno
The high fan is above the place where the small non industrial fan goes. (hard to explain) It sits higher.
Governor is on left rear side of carb between carb and coil
The fan is actually mounted on front of block at the heighth of the front crossover exhaust-pipe.

hi, the HD 292's were all 4bbl, usually in 700-750's, would have had to order it in a 500-600, lincoln y's were used in 750and 800, 58-64, super duty's in 850, 900, 950, and 1000's, 52-53 lincoln y's in f-8 only. 54-57 lincoln y's 800, 850, 900's. most early ford trucks 54-58 used 239-256 as standard and 272-292's were optional, truck parts manuals will tell you what engines were available in what size truck. i believe if you had some pull you could have ordered any engine available that year in your truck. in 63 you could have ordered a 427 in a pickup, i've seen the adds from ford. i don't know it all, in fact most people tell me i don't know anything, but i do know you will find out a lot from old ford truck parts manuals. just trying to help, wayne.
