I want a Tachometer

I have a 2000 F-150 XL with a 4.2. It does not have a tachometer. I want to install an aftermarket tach. Are there any out there compatable with the coil pack or where do you connect the negative coil lead on the coil pack?

You have an ODB port? I do believe the 2000 does. But you might want to consider a ScanGauge and BlendMount. A lot easier install. Plus it'll give you code lookup option and other gauges.

Yeah. The Dynoscan SPD does the same thing too, and has a great digital gauge that can be setup as a tach.

Most do hookup to the negative lead. But I don't think you can hook into the coil pack directly. But I am pretty sure that there is a tach wire meant for diagnostics.

Just go to the tach manufacturers website. They have a lookup for wiring it. See if your model is listed and take a look at their instructions.

There may be a tach wire coming out of the ECU, usually they are white with a pink or red stripe but a wiring diagram would tell you for sure.

I have an auxillary idle controller for my truck and it obviously reads rpms...if you are short on cash it might be a cheaper and easier (just plug in) alternative

Can you not find a factory cluster with a tach included?Im not sure but would think that if its an OEM cluster, perhaps the truck harness might have the tach drive line already there?.(Salvage yard perhaps?)..Just a thought
