460 cam

im building a mild 460 for my 83 gt. its out of my 78 truck. the motor will have a performer intake, 750 holley, headers and a cam. id like a cam with a little lope at idle that will make good power to 5200 but im running a stock stall in my c6. i heard the stock stall is 1800-1900 rpm but not for sure. what cam do you guys think would work well? the car will weigh around 3000lbs and have a 3.73 gear.

What kind of modifications do you plan on making to the engine, just yank it from the truck, cam it, and install in the car? There are alot of inexpensive things I would do before installing the motor, that will make your efforts way worth it. Nothing would be more embarrassing to install that 460 in your stang, to get beaten by just about every EFI V8 stang on the road.

read my post again masterbeavis. i stated a performer intake, 750 holley, headers and a mild cam. the motor will be rebuilt with new rings, a valve job and gaskets. if my 4800 lb f150 ran high 14s in the 1/4 (which will beat most efi stangs) i think the 3000lb mustang will go a lot faster.

something like a comp xtreme energy xe256H would be decent with that intake combo, but it will be a smooth almost stock idle, you could step up to the XE262-H it would give you a little more idle, but would be better suited for a rpm or stealth intake but will still work good with the performer. Any bigger then that and you would really need to upgrade your intake, and need a bigger then stock stall.

yeah i was thinkin those cams both look good. i better get improved springs that can handle the lift. how much lift can the stock springs handle?

I'd strongly suggest a cam kit which will contain a new cam, timing set, valve springs, and associated items like spring retainers. Changing the springs is pretty easy and will allow you to go with more lift. Go with a large cam that is designed to work with a stock converter. I'd like to suggest going to a higher stall converter and doing some head work, but that's just more money in the quest to go faster.

Have you tried using Comp Cams software it's free. Compquest 6 or something like that, you can download it from Comp cams site. It's a fun little tool that will give you some rough numbers to work with and some gives suggestions on cams (obviously) and converter stall speeds. It's kind of a poor mans desktop dyno.

Good luck.

As far as I read, you only planned on slapping parts onto a tired junkyard engine.
