Shifting into 4 wheel drive

Shifting into 4 wheel drive
I have a 2000 F150 Supercab 5.4L 4x4 auto tranny, with the 4 wheel drive shifter on the floor. All of the manuals I have read for it say this,
I've tried shifting into 4 wheel drive with the truck in drive, but stopped, and it just grinded when I tried shifting into 4 wheel drive. I stopped as soon as it started grinding! It shifts into 4 whel drive fine w/ the tranny in nuetral. Has anyone tried shifting into 4 wheel drive on the fly like the manuals say can be done?
"Shifting from 2H (2WD high) to 4H (4WD high)
Move the transfer case lever to 4H
(4WD High) at a stop or any
forward speed up to 88 km/h
(55 mph)".

jobo, do you have the 4x4 stick on the floor, or the electronic **** on the dash? If you do have the stick on the floor, do you put it in nuetral before shifting to 4 wheel drive?
Octane, I know you can shift into 4 wheel drive on the fly with the electronic 4x4. I have the stick on the floor.
I've never heard of being able to shift on the fly with this before.

It sounds like maybe your vacuum shift motor(mounted on the front axle tube) may not be slding the front dif into 4 wheel drive all the way. I would have someone move the shift lever between 2H and 4H, while you look underneath and see how far the shift lever on the diff moves. You may have a vacumn leak if thats the case.

big: all four tires are the same size, 265/70R17 Nitto Terra Grapplers
m: I've never tried shifting it while I was moving, so the back tires weren't spinning.
96: thanks for the info, I'll check that out. Like I said in my origianl post, I haven't tried shifting it on the fly, because I didn't think it was possible. I was just wanting to know if anyone's done this before I try it, so I don't jack anything up.
Thanks for all the info. this site is great!
