Vintage Snowmobile Parts

Well our "fleet" of sleds include a 1975 Scorpion Whip 400, a 1976 Scorpion Whip 440, and soon to be a 1976 John Deere Liquifire 440. The 400 is the only one that runs right now. The 440 is in pieces on the bench, awaiting new sleeves, pistions/rings, and gaskets. Yes, I blew it up. We're thinking that old age was the culprit there, no obvious signs. Should run pretty good once it's back together.....it was running real strong before it blew up anyway. Sounds like we're gonna go to my uncle's and get the Deere this weekend. The story on it is a cracked block. I'm preparing for the worst. I've found everything except for new cylinder liners. Does anyone know of a place to liners for that old dog? If anyone knows of any other parts for these let me know.

-Jake

Figures, we will get em all running and it won't snow another inch.....

So the place I ordered sleeves for the 440 from called. They only have one, and aren't manufacturing anymore. AWESOME.....this was shortly after I had been riding the 400 and the exhaust pipe broke (it was cracked and welded before, cracked again.....finally broke).......needless to say I was pretty happy about both of those things. Such is life....

I got the 400 up and running today. I took the pipe from the 440 and put it on there......it ran pretty good. I think it *might* still have a clutch issue, but I'm not totally sure about it. I beat myself up pretty good today as these have little suspension on them and most of the drifts are pretty hard. We need more fresh snow on top of what we have........oh well.

Well gang, it's that time of year again!!!! Maybe since we have more users there will be better response to this thread.

Anyway, this weekend I'm gonna fire up the ol 440 and make sure it runs. I'm also gonna go see (since I don't remember) if I welded the exhaust pipe back up. I don't even remember if it's on the 400 or the 440. Oh well.

Also, we've inherited my brother's 1993 Yamaha Exciter II 570. It's currently blown up so I'm probably gonna tear it down sometime soon and see what we need for parts. We've got a few trains of thought here A) Crankshaft seal went out, leaking gas/oil out there causing it to go lean (gas/oil goes to bottom end for lube, then to top end for burn) B) this machine has a seperate reservoir for oil and it is injected into the gas - so that oil pump could be bad, not giving enough oil for lube or C) (and maybe the most probable) my brother bought this sled when he was at Wyotech for college - 7000 ft. We're about 1800 ft at my place so the carbs probably aren't jetted right. Anyone good with twin Mikuni's on a two-stroke? I've got a repair manual coming - hopefully that helps. We're really thinking it's C because he rode it alot up in the mountains and didn't have problems. I think he blew it up once riding up there. When he came back home he really started having problems. I think it's been blown twice or three times since then. I'm tempted to throw it together and haul it to Kearney Yamaha and see what they think......I've heard good things about them.

Anyone else ride?

Welp, I had the 440 out for a bit yesterday and this morning. My brother and I went over to my grandpa's and got the 400. I'm going to mess with it here when I go back out. Hopefully I'll get parts ordered tonight for the Yammerhammer and get that running. Sounds like another 1-3 on Tuesday. We need it. There really isn't enough right now for snowmobiles, but I'd like to make sure they run.
