any resto job will take time and money. if it's a fun project then keep at it. part of the fun is looking and finding parts. they are out there. i bought my 38 thinking it was in pretty good shape( see my gallery). right now its a bare frame, but i can see in my mind the end product. there is something satisfying about saving an old one . good luck

Well, I have finally settled on the 351. It is out of a 73-78 Ford LTD. My dad says its a 351W. But on Wikipedia it shows the Windsor not available, just the 302W, 351C, 351M, 400C, 429, or the 460. I had the hood up on it the other day and found it was stuck but didn't look that closely at it. I'm hoping I can also use the rear end from it. The car has sat upside down for a year or 2 and outside for a decade before that. But the air cleaner was on it and I'm hoping that its not busted. If so, then I'm gunna have to go with the 400 or find one. The 360 is to far gone, the 370 is an old junk bus motor. Thanks for the motovation guys!

Well, I got my engine out. Its a 351w bolted up to a FMX 3spd transmission. I haven't been able to identify the rear end yet but I believe it will work on my truck. Its all out of a 74 Ford LTD.

I got the engine in the shop and its going to need some work. I decided to keep with the automatic, since I already have it and I can turn it. The engine is stuck schmuk and will likely need a rebuild, and to my knowledge hasn't been bored yet. It also had some nasty looking antifreeze in it, but it still smelled like antifreeze so I hope I have no cracks. Of course it has all the ugly crap piled on it. But luck would have it that it has some good mounts for possible addons, like an air-compresser.

But, I am going to get a new intake manifold+carb, probably from edelbrock and what I was wondering is if these aftermarket intakes have stuff setup for vacuum. My transmission, so my dad says, requires vacuum in order to shift. And from what I see, that vacuum is supplied by my intake manifold. If I buy a new intake manifold, will I lose my vacuum supply? Do I need an EGR valve?

Thanks again guys for the help.

I would double check your engine. Most LTD's in the ERA came thru with a 351M/400. I have one from a 73. Unless someone swapped the engine out and put a 351W in it. But yes a aftermarket intake will have a spot for vacuum on it, you just need to either reuse the vacuum tree from the old intake, or make one youself with some brass fittings. (Easiest is just reuse old one) No you will not need a EGR valve (but you might want to check on the local emissions laws first)
Here are two ways to free up that engine. #1 is to drain all the oil out of it. Put the plug back in. Fill up with kerosene to the top of the valve covers and let it sit for a while (the longer the better) Then once ready to work on it, drain all the kerosene out (You can get rid of it with someone that burns waste oil for heat) and try turning it over by hand. If you do this method, unless you do a complete tear down you will want to run straight 30w oil thru for a little bit, then drain and put 10w30 in it with a new filter. If you do a complete tear down then that step is not necessary.
#2 is to pull the spark plugs and squirt some marvins mystery oil in every other day (Put plugs back in to prevent dirt from getting in)

I believe your rear is most likely a 8.8 rear. Not a bad rear considering they are also under 1/2 ton trucks and broncos.

Also you might want to check what trans you have. Some came thru with the FMX and some with a C6 trans. If its a FMX, I would look at getting a different tranny.

I'm pretty sure its a 351w. This sticker on the valve cover says so.

Here is just a general pic of the engine.

Also, I already have the transmission and it appears to be good. What other choices do I have? I have heard that the T5 is a good manual.

Well, more news after a few months. The 351 had bad cylinder bores. At the top of the cylinder water had sat when the engine was upside down and rusted some very deep pits in the cylinder. So I traded a 57 Chevy Bel-Air we had around for a couple engines. A Ford 352 out of a 66 Galaxy and a 460 out of a 75 lincoln. Both were not stuck and appear to be good engines. I plan on using the 352 since its much more of a vintage engine than the 460 is and I want to use the 460 for another project. But, I had to clean out my shop and that is a long story in itself before I could get any work done.

Just wanted to drop in and let everyone here at FTE that I was still around. Even though I was probably not missed.

First make sure that they are the same bolt patterns, and if not you need to get some adapters. But the best thing to do would be to start your own thread and ask your question there.

More progress on my truck. Have gotten the truck down to a rolling chassis, put the front end back together, and almost have the engine assembled. Its getting pretty exciting. Here are some pics.

How are you going to go about mounting the engine and tranny? Are you going to custom fabricate mounts or are you going to use some type of kit?

I was going to custom fabricate the mounts and use make the crossmember fit the frame that I will get of a parts truck when I get my tranny.
