downpipe removal - about how long?

I have a Tymar downpipe and diamond eye 4"exhaust system sitting in a box at home but would like to know about how long did it take for you guys to get the old downpipe out and get the area preped to install the new downpipe. I don't get a lot of free time at home to do this "fun" stuff and I don't want to under estimate the time needed to do it. Thanks.

A big variable will be the rust factor and how well you deal with it. Do you own a sawzall? My 97 came from the New England "rust belt" and there was a fair amount to deal with but I have done a lot of it. I also had a good helper and my kitty had already gotten lost. To answer your question from popping the hood open to taking it on a test drive took 2 hours. By yourself and a few crusty fasteners to deal with I can easily see half a day.

It took me about 2 hours to get the old system off by myself,
just under two hours to get the DP in, and the rest of my system took all of five minutes. If you're by yourself, set aside half a day.

It took about 5 hrs(8 beers) total for me by myself.......hardest part is removing the DP.......a couple tries with the new one to make sure the pinch weld is hammered down enough and the rest is easy.

Like I mentioned in the beginning I have the Tymar 3 to 4" down pipe, did any of you guys have problems with it interferring with the transmission lines? I haven't really heard of anyone around here mentioning it but when Diesel Power mag did thier diesel vs gas article they had to adjust thier line.

I have the complete system from Diamond Eye......no problems at all......only interference I had was to keep the kids in the house during removal of the DP,so they did not learn any new words

It took me about 2 hours to get it out and a new one in. I used a combination of sawzall, 4 1/2in angle grinder and 3in air cutter, depending on which tool got in there best. You'll have to cut off the cobra head where it goes into the turbo. Before cutting I removed it and duct taped over the opening to keep shavings out. Then I clamped it back on to hold it while cutting. Some on here say don't worry about it - the shavings will blow right out but why not take an extra minute and be careful? I replaced the rest of the system later on, which took about 3 - 4 hours.

Nope, no problems with the tranny line. there's alot of space once it clears the pinch weld.

You may have a little trouble with the transmission lines. I didn't like that they were so close so I saved the insulation off the old DP and tie-wired it onto the new DP. At least it will deflect some of the heat off the lines.

My first DP install took about 5 hours. The second one took about 2...by myself. Like every body else said, The hardest part is getting the old pipe cut up at the turbo. A sawzall with very good blades is a must. A torch won't cut that metal due to the high nickel content....and burned-up engine compartment . A port-o-power makes short work of pushing the flange and firewall back.

it took me like 3 hours to cut off the old downpipe with a sawzall long blades and a bunch of them helped and i cut the rest of the exhaust off so the install was easy i think i used a piece of wood and a big hammer to beat the fire wall in not to hard of a job just kinda nasty with all the rust that gets shock loose from the sawzall i'd get some safety glasses and lots of beer

It'll take about 10 minutes to get it out if you can get your hands on a plasma cutter.
Got any buddies with one?

I don't even think it took me 5 minutes to remove my old 3" dp with the plasma. If you have access to one, I'd recomend using it.

Yeah it doesn't take very long. I remembered where I needed to cut and made short work of it.

I don't have an auto, so I'm not sure how your doing on room, but you should be alright.
