why do you weld the exhaust crossover?

just curious, I have read on these posts that people are welding there exhaust crossover before install there new intake manifolds. Just wondering, do you have to do that? Is there any advantage doing it? I will be changing my intake soon so just curious what the pro's and con's for doing this. thanks.

It's for keeping the carb cooler.

I just made sheet metal blockoff plates, and RTV'd them in place - I think the hole in the gasket is big enough that the plate can be made bigger than the hole in the head and it'll just lay in there. A little glue, and you're done.

Used for racing more then anything! Not a great idea for an everyday driver.... It does help keep the air and fuel charge cooler (= more power) but out in the cold or cool weather.......Forget it. JMHO

I use as a piece of stainless steel flashing(from hardware store) to make my blockoffs. That way they don't deteriorate over time.
