E4OD shudder fixed under $300
hi all,
I have a 94 F150 2wd 300 I6 with the E4OD trans with 181,000 miles on it. last year, the tranny started slipping and ever since, weve been shopping around for tranny work. of course, we were quoted any where between $2000-$3500 dollars. then we were told it was the tranny, it was the rear end ($1000). then we were told it was the torque converter ($750-$1500). we were told to put some tranny additive in and that helped alittle.
fast forward to today.
brought the truck in for tune up and checking a couple other things. one of the owners of the garage is a tranny guru, so my dad wanted him to take a look at my tranny. i got a phone call around 1:30 and my dad told me that the tranny shudder would be fixed today. after peeling myself off the ceiling, my dad explained that the problem would be fixed by changing torque converter fluid and trans fluid and replacing a filter. the mechanic explained that between 92-97, Ford put fluid in that would break down prematurely. they replaced the torque converter fluid and tranny fluid and replaced the filter. the work cost roughly $242. i got in the truck, headed out and took it for a test drive. sure enough, the problem was fixed. i couldnt believe it. figured id pass on the good word.
Brian.

Most places don't do a "flush" with a machine--they just drain and refill the tranny---you still get lots of old dirty fluid in the converter-- a true flush is gold for a 100,000 plus tranny---I have been arguing with my corporate idiot for 10 years to get a flush machine for our shop--it ain't gonna happen---so we drain the tranny-change a filter and ship it---only runs about $ 100 though...you get what you pay for I guess...
I feel better now--nice place to let off steam !!
