What is the proper way to change fuel line?
I mentioned briefly in a previous post about the list of problems that popped up while changing the thermostat in the 1960 F100 292. The most unexpected (and probably most dangerous) happened while changing the lower radiator hose. The hose bumped against the fuel hose that goes from the tank line to the pump and gasoline started leaking slowly from the hose. I assumed that once the fuel that was uphill (carb side) drained down it would be stop leaking so I could fix it. As you have probably already figured out, that was not the case. A large amount of fuel under pressure started flowing from the tank line. This was the original style hose with the fittings built in, so I pinched it off with vise grips, removed the fitting from the pump and bought a hose barbed line that will fit that. The 1/4 inch hose wouldn't fit the other flared end (all the while plugging with my finger while making attempts to fit it over the flare and spilling everywhere). We collected at as best we could in a gas can and I plugged it againwhile cutting the flare off and eventually pushed it over the metal line and clamped it.
So...in a long round about way...since I don't have a repair manual and have never had a truck with a tank higher than the lines (cab mounted) what are you supposed to do to keep the fuel from flowing while working on these lines? Is there a petcock in the line somewhere? Are you just expected to lose 18 gallons of fuel and get stranded if you have a leaky line or hose on the highway?
Thanks.

The only way that I could think of to stop the flow of fuel from the line on the frame would be to disconnect the line from the top of the tank, then it couldn't gravity feed. Or you could remove the fuel cap and then blow the gas back into the tank, without fuel in the line, it can't siphon.
