Potential 2002 Expedition Purchase

Potential 2002 Expedition Purchase
I sold my 1995 F350 Crew 4x4 and am now looking at Expeditions for the replacement.
I have narrowed it down to a couple of 2002's, one is an EB and the other is an XLT. I am more biased to the XLT due to its condition and preferred color. Both are 2wd and have 79k miles on them.
I am looking to get some responses on a couple of items.
Air Suspension: What is the expected life of the parts of this system?
5.4 vs. 4.6: I was looking for a 4.6 for the better MPG but this XLT has the 5.4. What difference in real world MPG will I see?
Oasis Report: I am hoping someone call pull an Oasis report for me...Please!
VIN: 1FMRU15L92LA91237 . My email is fordmanic AT gmail DOT com.
Thanks FTE!

Hi, recently bought a 2001 XLT 4X4 with the 4.6 and 355 gears. Not bad, but the my mpg is at best 17 on all highway around 65. Yes, the 4X4 sticks up a littler higher so you could do better.
However, as many others have said you might be better off with the 5.4 and the F250 style transmission - 4R100, as you MPG will be low with a 5,000LB vehicle anyway. Just something to think about, I never owned a 5.4.
What gears do you have?
Good luck
Mike

There were 2 transmissions offered, the 4.6 had a 4R70W transmission and the 5.4 has a 4R100 transmission. The F250 also had a 4R100 I think that's where the "F250 style transmission" comes into play.
When I was looking for a Expedition I test drove both the 4.6 and 5.4. In my opinion the 4.6 was underpowered, but I was also looking at 4x4's.
I finialy settled on a 2001 XLT 4x4 with a 5.4 and 3.55 gears. I get about 18mpg on the highway and 12ish in the city. I'm sure a two wheel drive gets just a tad better.
Also here is a link to the specs of that generation expy Clicky
Good luck in your search.

I had the 5.4 in my 03 4x4, typically running around town it saw 14 and on the hiway it got 17 I bought a 02 explorer with the 4.6 to replace it when I wrecked it in aug, it's been getting 15 in town and 17 on the highway (both had 3.73 limited slip rear ends) so in a slightly smaller and lighter vehicle the 4.6 is beating the 5.4 but a whopping 1mph in town and equal on the highway, the underpowered in an expy is not worth it IMHO.

Thanks for all of the responses so far. Looks like mileage with the 5.4 is pretty acceptable at 17 mpg hiway.
As for the tranny, is it a good assumption that the 4R100 is more durable/reliable that the 4R70?
Also, I would really like to get an Oasis report on this puppy. Incidentally, I do not work nor live 'near' a Ford dealership. Can someone help a fellow FTE'r out?

This isn't really what you want, but a free tool that gives you a little more VIN information from a Ford site. May be useful to you.
