Pinion Bearing Preload

Pinion Bearing Preload
I know this question is better suited for the drivetrain forum, but there does not seem to be the same knowledge or response level as this forum over there.
I have a 10.25" rear axle out of a 1996 F-250 or F-350. I bought it off e-bay from some goober who switched the yoke to a pre-93 short style and am trying to get this axle set up properly. I robbed the correct yoke off a '94 axle I have, and got a new crush sleeve and seal. I've started cranking down on the pinion nut to where the pinion slop is about to be gone and need to know when to stop.
I've read manuals that say there is no spec, and to check the torque before taking it apart - I never had that opportunity. I have also read where I'm trying to obtain 8-16 in-lbs with the carrier installed, and axleshafts pulled.
Can anyone tell me what torque reading I should be shooting for with the axleshafts in, and drums pulled? I'm just trying to avoid cracking open another part of this axle - I need to get this truck back together.
Thank You.
