popcorn popper

Hello have an 03 taurus and 2 different 06 taurus's that ive experienced some unusual noises with. All 3 cars seem to exhibit a popping noise thru the intake system at an idle, sounds like an old fashion popcorn popper, or even a coffee pot perculating. The 03 has 19,000 on her and 80,000 on one taurus 48,000 on the other. All 3 run fine off of idle and all the way thru the rpm range, Its when I set the cruise the problems start. Get a vibration and like a hesitation, only with the cruise on, very hard to explain. Ive read many of the threads about pinging/knocking with these engines and It doesnt seem to fit. All 3 go to different mechanics for routine maintenance, and all 3 mechanics seem confident Its a vacuum leak, all 3 want 4 hours of labor to tear them apart to find the leaks too. Any ideas? or should I just take 1 in have It fixed so that I can repair the other 2 myself once I know the problem?

That sounds a little high just to find the leak. You should be able to have them smoke tested. They will block off the throttle plates and then pump smoke in from a thing kinda like the party machine. When the smoke comes out they have your leak.
As for the noise I know what you are talking about, my father has an '04 taurus and he keeps saying his coffee pot is perculating, I finally heard it yesterday and now I am on the hunt to solve it.
