Genex Auto Dim/Temp/Compass Install Directions

I just got my Gentex Mirror from eBay and thought I would do a write up since there are a few things I found out later that could have saved me time. If you want to get one they are an amazing deal from this guy, only $99 bucks and he stands behind his stuff 100%. eBay Motors: Gentex NVS Dual Display Temp,Comp,Dim, Universal Kit (item 180304552065 end time Nov-10-08 15:49:13 PST) Sorry the pics aren't that great since I took some from my iPhone. It also got to dark so I took these after, hence the reason you don't see any wires hanging.<O</O

7.3L Powerstroke Ignition power source. Arrow is pointing to red wire with yellow trace. This round black plug is attached to the metal dash chassis just above.

<O></O> I would wait until you are sure how you want everything before you cut holes in the firewall plug.

I am going to relocate it from up top to here. It works fine, but heats up from engine bay heat when stopped.

Wow Pike. I'm having a hard time right now coming up with reasons not to spend $100 on this. No pics of the mirror installed?

Thanks for the write up and the link. Now I know what I'm getting for Christmas.

Oops, I got in a hurry at work and forgot to upload it I'll edit it tomorrow. Yeah, I am so happy to have it. It is the same kind that came in my Silverado and I am so glad to have it again.

Talking

Ok, Here are some finished pics. I recommend this to everyone!! The Ford mirror is wide and short where this one is almost as wide but slightly taller making for a much better rearview picture.

Does the mirror only have to have power from the round plug under the dash, or does the mirror, the temp probe, and navigator all have seperate power.

Nope, just one power source, one ground and two wires to the probe.

Just an update, I moved the sensor probe to the stock location and have had even better results with accuracy. In the stock position there is only 1-2*F at most of heat soak. I was worried in this position it may accumlate snow or be hit by driving rain and that it would scew the numbers but after several tests in hard snow and rain it works perfect.

Can I ask, how long from start to finish did this job take?

Thanks,

Richard

It took me less than an hour to put it in. Then it took me about 2 weeks to remember I had a temperature display up there. I kept forgetting.

One other nice benefit is this is one of those non-glare mirrors, so the headlights from vehicles behind you aren't nearly as bright as with the stock mirror.

Thanks,

Well I got a little over excited and decided to do it late in the afternoon and ran out of light so part of the time was holding a flashlight. It took me about 1.5 hrs of actual work time to install since I was doing it from scratch and looking for wires. I could do it now in an hour no problem.

Thanks Clay (and you too, F350-6), I've been thinking about adding one of these to my Ford, as I really like the one in my Silverado. Sure comes in handy when you're reading road signs that keep saying "Caution, Ice on Bridges", when the outside temp shows 45 dregrees on the mirror.

Respects,

Richard
