312 Oil Slinger

I`m rebuilding a 312 y block and have a problem. I cannot find any info on the front crankshaft oil slinger. There was none on crank when I tore engine down. I now have one. The slinger has a key slot on it, but when I slide it on crank there is no key to slide it on. Key is under crank timing gear. Because of this, I`m thinking, possibly my 312 did not come with one and is not needed. Any ideas from you expert 312 builders out there?

Most engines have eliminated the front oil slinger. I know that the last 2 Chevy engines I rebuilt did not have them. One was a 1972 350 and a newer 350. No problem without the slinger on these two. I am like you I felt kinda afraid to build them until I found that they had quit using them.

Thanks, mytbtruck
I`m kinda thinking I don't need it either. I`ll see what anyone else that may have rebuilt a 312 may have to say. Its kind of important to me, so help me out here, Guys Thanks.

GM never used them (least on the SBC and BBC's) but Ford and Mopar do.
I'd use it...as Ford still used them in the late 70's (as I know by doing a late 70's 460), so there must be a reason to keep using them?

Mike,
Your right, there is a reason to use them. I think mainly to keep a lot of oil pressure off front seal. But I have no key to secure the slinger on and I`m afraid it will just freely spin on the crank and cause wear and probably noise. Thanks for your input.

Now the ones I've use on Mopar and the 460, go on the cam bolt, and are not keyed...just the torque of the bolt holds them on.

Never had an issue with the Mopar ones coming loose (460 has yet to be fired), but the original 460 one wasn't loose when I pulled it apart.

Have to assume if you'd be worried about it "coming loose and spinning", then the bolt would be coming loose, and the oil slinger would be the least of your problems

Ohhhh, wait a minute...I know what you're talking about...I got my reply confueds with the eccentric slinger on the cam gears.

Re: the one on the crank gear...do some digging for more info to get you satisfied, I too searched for info on it (the little tin thing on the crank gear...that's what you mean, right?) and it seemed about 50/50 on those who ran them, and those who didn't. I found no negatives on not using it (different engine, but...)

Anyways, sorry for the mis info above.

Tell you the truth, I've forgotten whether I used it or not on the 460!

Thanks again, Mike
I`m leaning to not use it at all. I`m assuming the new crankshaft seals are much better than the ones of 40 - 50 years ago. So its probably not needed. Thanks Mike

It had one originally.

B6A6310B .. Oil Slinger / 3.90" O.D. / 1.253"/1.263" I.D.

Fits: 1956/59: 272/292/312 / 1960/62: 292 / None listed after 1962.

Do the specs of this slinger match what you have?

If not, Green Sales has 10 B6A6310B slingers available: 800-543-4959.

I'd call 'em and verify if their slingers have a keyway slot on it.

Bill,
Thanks for the good info. My slinger is indeed 3.90 O.D. and 1.263 I.D. so it must be correct. I was just wondering, when the crank damper slides on does it hold the slinger tight to the crank timing gear? If so, it my not need the keyway to hold it in place and therefor it wont rub on inside of timing cover causing noise and undue wear.
By the way Bill, I want to take the time to personally thank you for all the help your posts have helped me over the past few years. They are very timely and accurate.
I truly appreciate you and your informative posts. Happy Holidays to You and Yours.
