Dually Myths/Facts
#16
the reason for tall skinny tires is that they saw through the slippery top layers of the mud or snow to reach the firm ground below. A wide tire would "float" on top of the surface, wide tires are more ideal for sand. Now on dry pavement a dually truck would get better traction than a SRW, but in the mud or snow a SRW will get better traction.

Duallies also arent as good on muddy roads.
They wont follow the tracks and you are sideways most of the time.
The front wheels dig down and folllow the old ruts and the back wheels try and ride on the top which usually makes everything go squirrley.
Not many loggers or ranchers around here run duallies unless its there highway , trailer pulling truck.
Single wheels are bettter in the snow and the mud.

Heres one SRT Super Duty that goes pretty good in the deep snow... would go even better if it was a DRT :-)

Off of the traction topic.
Here are some benefits opposed to SRW:
Duallies help stop trailer sway (more control/stability)
If you get a blowout you still have one tire for traction so you are less likely crash your truck and trailer.
Tires last longer and are cheaper 16" tires.
You can get 2 flat tires and still be good even if you dont have a spare.
Take corners better handling wise.
Don't need a trailer to put 5k lbs of material in.
Once youve had a DRW the looks and characteristics grow on you.
Can still park anywhere between or on the lines and if other cars parked to close to the line it is not my fault that they can't get in from that side.
I'm sure that there are many other things that I can't think about right now.
Oh yeah DANA 80 axle is a nice upgrade also.

Thank you all so much for the input. I appreciate all the links and knowledge you all bring to the FTE Forums. Im just happier than hell that this snow season i will finally have a 4x4 truck. I loved my first truck, but 4x2 is not for Chicago Winters... =( and your quote Dave, being towed out by a chevy from somewhere... I had to be towed out of trouble by a DODGE... (in my 4x2 truck) thats worse on my list, i'd rather a chevy save me.
And Vinford - The thing you said about running throuch mud tracks, you couldn't be any more right, the duallies love to try and ride on top of the front tire track and just wipe your rear end around.
Thanks again guys.

Thank you so far. Beautiful Truck there Dave. I don't know if anyone here is a fan of the show Mythbusters, but I'd like to see something like this on there. The traction i mean, who cares about my inner tire wear, lol. But I guess it wouldn't be entertaining to enough people to ever make an episode about duallies... Also, I've seen Semi trucks with single wide tires instead of duals on the trucks drive wheels. I found that to be odd. I wonder if it's for traction, cost, road wear, or some other reason...
You have to back into a space, its a pain in the *** to back out of one in a full parking lot.
