If you are installing a new radio unit, just use a harness adapter, trust me, you don't want to splice. If you splice, you make it much harder to ever install a different stereo in the future, and you also make it harder to migrate the stereo to a new car. If you use a harness adapter, you do not need any wiring diagrams, just match the colors.
The easiest way is to use the adapters. Right tool for the job. You're going to lose the rear controls with an aftermarket radio regardless of how you install it.

ive got the radio/cdplayer from a 98 mustang that im planning to install, one of the connectors matches and the radio fires up, but the other cable doesnt match. ive read various things about aerostars having an amp for the rear speakers, but ive never been able to track down a definitive answer.
It may have. If it does look in the dash behind where the radio goes. There should be a silver box, it's 6"x9" and shaped like a 6x9 speaker frame.

I have a wiring schematic from Crutchfield that came with an installation kit I bought from them. I used it to install a Kenwood in my '92 and match the Aerostar wiring to the Kenwood wiring.
You might check with Crutchfield to see if they'll send you one.

Not true....not true. I installed a panasonic head unit from crutchfield and used their adapters. Everything still worked.
