Snow Chains for Swampers?

I'm running 38.5x14.5x16.5 in Super Swamper TSL/SX. I don't know how good these are in the winter. First one with em. Does anybody know where i can get some chains for these? Or how would i go about making some? Thanks, don't wanna run over a Honda this winter.

Snow Chains for Swampers?

From my experince as a tire repairer/mounter/seller, those tires will be okay for snow drifts, but they will be awful on ice and or slush and hard pack....

My advice is find a set of four narrow 16.5's (I'd also purchase a set of cheap steel rims) and put some studs in those baby's, and keep your big tires for the summer. (check with your local tire shop as some states don't allow studs, here in South Dakota It's Oct 1 to May 1)

Chains are a big PIA, especially if not put on right, I can count well into the hundreds of brake hoses, fenders, fog lamps etc, that were torn off by tire chains that have come into where i work. Tire chains can also do one heck of a number on your tire tread also.

Not to mention that chains are only ment for a top speed of 35 (even that's pushing it), and are ment for temporary/emergency use.

I know that buying a set of four 16.5 studded snow tires won't be cheap at first, but in the long run they will be more reliable and cheaper to run. Not only that but you won't have to get out an put the chains on, you'll already be prepared.

Snow Chains for Swampers?

i know in colorado most of the tire shops can "sipe" tires. that is basicaly cutting little groovs into the tread to allow for better traction on ice and stuff. almost all car and truck tires other than serious off road tires already have them. i hear that it helps off roading too, allowing the tread blocks to flex and wrap around rocks n stuff. when i worked at discount tire when i was in high school i think it cost like 15 bucks a tire or something like that. i think it would be a good idea on swampers. i just ordered a set of tsl/sx for my truck and am thinking about sipeing them as soon as i return to colorado next spring. i am currently stationed in virginia so not much need for it here and i dont even know if i could get it done here. i think it would be a better investment than chains. an deffinetly a lot cheaper.
