well, since there are no lifters in a 5.4L. (overhead cam engine), the likely suspect is the cam phaser. Just guessing, probably louder on the passengers side, right?

Less likely, is a mis-aligned rocker. Either way, your looking at $$$$ to replace the rocker or phasers. It probably will cure the problem for a little while, but it will come back.

Lots of threads on this 'problem', i say that, because ford does not see it as a problem. they will tell you that it's normal. For the most part, it seems to be. My 04 XLT 5.4l has been doing the entire time I have owned it (since 66K). Now have 97k on it. 5w30 may quite it down a little. I had to add oil to mine at 3k recently, no 5w20, so I had to use 10w30. Wow, did that quite it down. just one quart of it though.

No power loss noticed because of the problem, just a louder engine, and other posters are correct, it does end up sounding like a deisel.

My o4 fx4 5.4 did the same thing. more noticible along side a building. I always used 5w20 synthetics mine started around 40,000 miles I traded it on 08 super duty w5.4 never caused me any problems i was told by the shop it was cam phasers. new truck has 10,000 on it now and quiet for how long?
as far the 5.4 being problematic i wouldnt say that. my 5.4 convinced me enough to get it in my new truck. spark plugs are the biggest issue and their not really a problem if you approach it right.
