to each their own....I tried the "new" Qpower 4x4 "full" synthetic 4x4 oil that was BOGO at AAP.....and i NEVER check my oil...until i noticed my oil gauge was fluctuating slightly at idle....yeah, it burned that crap right up! about 1.25 qts low, first time i've ever run it low on oil since i've owned her....back to MC and burn about .5 qts every 4-5k OCI.
5W20 on both brands.

I just did a 6k run on the Torquepower, and only added about a half quart during that 6k. I wouldn't say that this confirms it's better at all, but I got 24 quarts for $24, and that's 4 changes worth, so I'll use it. Probably back to the Motorcraft semi-syn after that. But with 6k between changes, I won't worry about it for another 18k miles or so.
I'm trying to break the 3k change habit I've had since my first car back in 1970...and I figure the syn will go 6k with ease. And with a Motorcraft filter, that's a nice $10 oil change. I don't feel more torque though.
(I also have a 20-quart stash of Valvoline Synpower 5W30, also 99 cents a quart, for one of the cars in the family.)
These are actually my first experiences with synthetic at all. In the early days of syns, there were problems with them softening seals and making engine leaks--so that scared me for years. And aside from that, I was always too cheap to pay the price. But having found a bunch of syn for a buck, figure I'll try it.
I remember using purple CAM2 oil in the early/mid 70's, and looking down into the fuel tank of my old '66 Vette in about 1973 and seeing the BRIGHT RED Mobil gas. I was so impressed. Sunoco was, of course, blue gas. Ahhh, the old days of lifestyle petro products
George
ps Arco Graphite was REALLY ooky black--and I even used some of that back circa 1980...didn't kill my 300 inch six in my '78 Ford pickup...

Have used Mobil 1, 5w-20 every 5,000 miles since new. Now at 131,000 miles I will turn this truck over to my 17 yr old for his first vehicle. I have not had a single issue with this truck, except normal wear items. (Buy new parts, and replace those that are broken). This has been the single most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Were it not for the 17 yr old, I would just keep driving it.
I take delivery of my new 08 King Ranch Supercrew 4x4 on Monday. I plan on keeping with the same program on this truck, too.

My point isn't about one brand over the other, because the superior quality of synthetic oil undeniable. If you deny your motor a quality synthetic in favor of "dino" oil because you want to save a few dollars, then the cheap oil is a waste of money!
How? Simple mathematics: buy "cheap" oil @ $3 / qt. 6 qts per oil change = $18. Synthetic oil costs twice as much @ $6 / qt. 6 qts per change = $36. If you change oil every 5,000 miles, then you will do 20 oil changes in100,000 miles. You will "save" $18 per change using the "cheap" oil. 18 x 20 = $360 "saved" over the life of the motor.
I KNOW that Mobil 1 will keep my motor alive well past 100,000 miles. I am never certain about the varying qualities of "regular oil". How much is a new motor? @ $4,000 - $5,000!
$360 over 5 years seems like CHEAP insurance to me!

Mobil One
I've been using Mobil One in all of my vehicles since 1989. I put 250K on my 86 VW, sold my 90 Aerostar at 195K. Right now I have a 96 Chevy 1500 with a 5.0 Vortec clocking 148K and a 2000 Windstar with 3.8 clocking 135K. So what do you think I'd use in my '05 F150? My 5.4 will get a steady diet of Mobil One 5W20. If I can't get any Mobile One I'll use the MC Full Synth 5W20.

semi or full syn oil is all the same some what. The important thing about these oils is to do proper oil changes and be consistant about it. My trucks get an oil change every 5k no matter what. I have owned Fords since well into the 70s and never had one that used oil between changes. And DO NOT add any additives to the oil. My 2002 had 160k on it when i traded her in , and the oil was still pretty clear on changes.Only reason i traded her was i WANTED a newer truck.
