I would like to introduce myself..... I appologize I will get it out right away I personally am a Chevy fan Sorry I will keep my opinions to myself....The reason for joining is I work at a company that has a fleet of 25 Fords + sterlings and internationals 4 - F150's, 12 - F350's, 6 - F450's, 2 - F550's, 1 - E350 all ranging from 2000 - 2008 and super duties are diesel. Im not the Mechanic but I do help him out a lot on equipment as I do have mechanical skills/background. I always have questions about things on them, and I am on chevy forums for my personal vehicles, so I thought I could bring my knowledge to here and also hope to get some help. I drive an 04 F350 for my company vehicle, and for personal I drive a 2006 chevy 2500hd and a 2003 Corvette 50th anniversery.

Does anybody actually read this thread, or is it just a bunch of us poor noobs introducing ourselves to each other? Hahaha. Either way... I'm picking up my first truck tomorrow afternoon. I am purchasing a 2004 F250 supercab 4x4 from a local engineering firm that is downsizing and reducing it's survey fleet. My company does a lot of work with them, so I got a ridiculous deal. It has 89k miles on it. It's a work truck, so XL package. That means there are a number things I'd like to do to it. This isn't my daily, but will probably be used a decent amount as my work truck when I'm out on site.

In case there ARE people reading this, I'll post pictures this weekend. Here's what I'd like to do to it.

- Floor Mats
- New stereo w/ aux input (im quickly learning the difficulties with our <2 din)
- New front bench? Right now it's one vinyl bench..
- Lift it?
- new tires eventually. possibly pair this with the lift kit

alright im done.

Nope, just a bunch of new guys talking to themselves.

The first post is usually the hardest one, so this is just a nice place to get that out of the way. If you read the entire thread, you'll find that someone does chime in every so often.

Welcome to FTE to all the new members. We do have engine specific forums located further down the main forum listing broken out by year model in case anyone has a more specific section, and if you scroll all the way toward the bottom of the main forum listing, you'll find a local chapter down there. It's a good idea to stop in and say Hi down there too in case you end up with a project where an extra set of hands might come in handy.

Yep, a lot of us read this thread. Not every day. More in the winter. You will find the various sites interesting, and if you decide to become a supporter, the CLUB offers more latitude in your writing and reading.

Welcome!

Hello from 2 Oklahoma newbies. We just bought a 2006 F-350 SuperDuty Turbo Diesel Dually to pull our 5th wheel. We traded our all-time favorite vehicle, a 1998 E-150 V-8 Triton engine conversion van which pulled our 26' trailer like a dream. Really hated to lose it, but it's no good with the new RV. The 350 works well, as far as we can tell, but this is our first diesel, and we have all new sounds to learn. We'll be asking some questions, too, no doubt.

Hello, I came here looking for a solution to a front leaf spring squeak on my 2000 F250 6.8L 4x4 crew cab. I found a thread detailing the problem and solution. Thank you very much. I'm sure I'll enjoy browsing the other topics here as well.

New to FTE... Hell, new to Fords!

I never thought I'd say it, but I guess I'm a Ford guy now. I went from never having owned one before, to coming to own 3 in the last month!

I owned a 2004 Dodge Ram diesel 4x4 quad cab short bed. Great truck. I decided to sell it for several reasons. I've been wanting a van forever to use as a mobile office and weekend camper for the fam. I also needed a more heavy duty truck as my work truck since I have been towing heavy trailers more lately. My goal was to get the van and a heavy duty work truck with the equity I had in my Dodge (S12K-ish) so I would have the vehicles I wanted with no payments.

I found my van first- before I had even sold the truck (whole 'nother frustrating/ funny story there to be told another day)- on Craigslist. '99 E350 15 passenger with the V-10. Has 125K miles and is in really great shape mechanically. Give the exterior a B+/A-. The guy had owned it about a year or year and a half. He had done a complete fluid change on the van, and changed a bunch of the bushings in the front end. During test drive it had a pretty noticeable shimmy/ shake in the front end. He thought he front wheel bearings need to be replaced. It's A/C also didn't work. I negotiated down $1000 over those items and got if for $4500. Turns out the "wheel bearings" were just the tires needing balancing. $24 at Les Schwab. While there the tech said "not only do the wheel bearings feel perfect, this is about as tight a front end on a Ford as you'll ever see." Score #1. Then took it to the DMV to get it licensed. Needed a smog test. New to this because of the diesel... The van registered so low on the computers it barely even made a reading. The DEQ guys were amazed! Score #2. Got the A/C fixed and the only noticeable dent/ scrape fixed for $325. Score #3. So far I have installed a brake controller and did the wiring for a 7 blade RV-style trailer plug.

I have two significant projects getting ready to begin on the van. The first is to start the conversion from 15 passenger, to mobile office/ family camper. Remove the seats, build/ install bed, cabinets, seats, storage, desk. The second is to convert it to 4x4. I have found the kit I am going to use and am now starting to look for the components that are needed- T-case, axles, springs, etc. I have an airbag system off an older truck that I am going to install after the 4x4 conversion, which will also give me on-board air. Further down the road will be bumpers, winch, racks, etc. I LOVE the van...

Next is the truck(s)... I have had my eye on these ex-Quest service trucks that go through an auction house that I am a member of. There are two styles that we see go through- the first have enclosed service bodys with HUGE water-cooled compressors on them to pump air out of the sewer systems when the guys are down in man-holes. The other style is called a "splicers" truck. It has an open back area and boxes down each side. It also has a platform right behind the cab that has one of those man-basket booms that they use to get up the telephone poles. The have on-board generators (4500 Onan) and bad-ass on-board compressors. The splicers truck is what I was after. I am a contractor and I want to be able to install a lumber rack over the boxes.

So a couple weeks ago I see that some of the Quest trucks are going to run through the auction so I headed down. I ended up getting a '92 Superduty chassis'd splicer's truck. 460 motor with approx 100K miles. Motor sounds really tight and strong. I also found a '99 F450 cab/chassis 2x4 with the V10. 175K miles. My plan was to move the service body off the older body style and install it on the '99. So far I have:
  1. removed the service body and the boom assembly off the old truck
  2. moved all the associated hoses and wiring over to the '99.
  3. Built a new platform for the boom area- I am not installing the boom platform/ structure on the '99 and the generator sits on this platform, so it needed to be recreated for the new truck. The other side of the platform will be a fuel-transfer tank for the equipment.
  4. Modified and installed a receiver-style hitch system.
  5. Installed the trailer brake controller and trailer wiring.
Next step is to install the actual box. Should be fairly straightforward. I am going to need to trim the back bumper to allow for the frame-work of the receiver hitch. U-bolts in the front, welded to the frame in the back. Re-install the wiring and hoses and I should be good to go. I am also going to convert this truck to 4x4. I am on the hunt for a rolled truck to steal parts off of. I have my concerns about the truck due to it's mileage, but I am hoping that maybe I can stumble into a truck that has a usable motor and tranny too and I can do an update during the 4x4 conversion. The body is a solid A-. Got the '92 with the service body for $1900 and the '99 for $1800. Hoping to sell the '92 cab/chassis for $2000+.

So there you have it! I figure that since I have jumped into the Ford word feet first, I need to get an education- which is how I ended up here... If anyone has any advice or info, I would love to have it. I am going to post on my two projects to gather info and advice, so please feel free to offer any info you may have. The first major thing I need is where to look for detailed specifications by year and model. I am looking for something that lists available motor, tranny, t-case and axles combos for each different model. I'd also like to know who the resident experts are for drivetrain knowledge.

See you on the boards......
