223 from car vs. 223 from truck

Hi,

I'm looking to replace the 223 in my 1963 F100. I've found a possible engine in a 1963 Galaxie. Is the 223 used by Ford in cars the same as the 223 they used in trucks? Do I need to be careful about anything with this swap? Thanks!

Welcome to FTE

Don't drop the block on your foot! (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

1960/63 Galaxie & 1960/64 F100 223's are the same, right down to the exhaust manifold, carb, waterpump, generator, etc.

The same 3 speed manual all syncromesh transmission was used in both cars/trucks.

The same A/T was used in both cars/trucks.

The only thing different is the motor mounts, as the cars use different ones.

btw: The last year for the 223 in Galaxies was 1963, in trucks = 1964.

I ran into a problem in the water pump area with my passenger 223. My truck water pump bolted up OK, but there was one small hole in the block, on the driver's side, that I had plug. In the auto parts store catalogs, the passenger 223 water pump looks much different than the truck version.

Probably best to stick with the passenger car water pump if you can still route hoses to the truck's radiator inlet and outlet without kinks. I didn't have a passenger car pump handy, so I just tapped the hole lightly and used a pipe plug with plenty of sealer.

The passenger 223 will probably also have the "silent lash" or "zero lash" rocker arms, which came out late in the 223's lifetime. They take a different adjustment procedure than you're used to, but they work just fine.

I had to buy a water pump for my 59 when I had it and it specified with or without heater. Just a thought, Rich.

Thanks again. Question regarding "silent" or "zero lash": does that mean the passenger car 223 had hydraulic lifters vs. the truck's solid lifters?

No, engines with zero-lash rockers still use the same solid lifters, just different rocker arms and perhaps a different camshaft profile.

A spring-loaded plunger in the body of the rocker arm pushes on a cam mounted to the tip of rocker. As the cam at the tip rotates outwards, it takes up the valve clearance.
