There it is.. classic GM service... even if the vehicles were half decent this crap gets old fast!
"Over a period of several weeks we had noticed a hard 1-2 shift while the transmission was cold.
When we reminded our trusty service advisor that the problem was with the 1-2 shift and off-neutral gear engagement, he assured us this was the proper fix.
We brought it back a few days later and were told by Santa Monica Chevrolet-Buick, "There is no problem. That is just how the truck shifts."
Days later the problem came to a head... The transmission locked up during a 2-3 shift. It screeched and lurched to a stop on Wilshire Boulevard.
The advisor was surprisingly frank with his diagnosis. "We've had a rash of these lately...with the input housing busting as the mileage gets up there.
We later learned there was an open technical service bulletin from Chevrolet about this issue. It made us wonder, if the dealer had already noted a "rash" of these transmission failures, why hadn't the sprag been replaced to begin with?"

Ford has had similar troubles over the years. Went through trans issues in the past with Explorer trannies. No company is perfect but what they do to resolve the issue can be very important, especially if they want to make a future sale.

I too have has bad service at a Ford dealer, one place I bought a truck from couldn't do anything right and it always took 3 visits to get warranty work done. But in general that's the exception not the rule. GM service is nothing of the sort however, and this goes way beyond the individual dealers to what appears to be corporate policy. If you could find it in print somewhere it would look like this....
GM Warranty Service Policy:
1. Deny there is a problem
2. If the customer insists "something" is wrong service enough to get the vehicle back on the road.
3. Apply TSBs fix only at direct customer request.
4. If vehicle fails because of known design fault fix it as long as it doesn't violate any of the numerous conditions in small print in the warranty.
5. Restart process at step 1 for every new customer.

Well things happen, but for Edmund's to say the four speed is unreliable is just showing how biased they really are. I have had many GM's and never once a trans problem, the four speed is very good trans. I have had our fleet truck up to 310k before selling, original trans.

I dunno about everyone else but transmissions are what turned me away from GM. My own cars having ****ty transmissions plus all the ones that we got in the garage just made me try Ford, and I've never been happier. I know all manufacturers have their screw ups, but if you know the right vehicle/combo to buy, you can get one that will last forever.

They only started being unreliable when they started making them. With a high mileage GM truck, you don't ask if the transmission has been replaced or rebuilt but when. It was also a problem with cars. I chose 4 company GM cars and since I had a 50% transmission failure rate (one twice) and we only kept them 60,000 milles, I changed brands and had one failure in the next 10.

Ford the most part, Ford tranmissions got light years better after doing away with the AOD and A4LD. Those were junk. The 4R70W was a vast improvement over the AOD.
Perhaps they should rename the Silverado the Desperado since the driver will be desperate for a ride home

I call B.S, GM makes probably the best trans period I am sorry but its true go to any trans shop and ask. Turbo 350,400, 700r4, 4l60e, 4l80e Are all great transmissions if you think not your only lying to your self.
