Keyless remote programming

I need help on figuring out how to program the keyless entry remote. My dad got one for the truck because when he bought the truck the used truck dealer didn't have one for the truck.

Hey Jacob, do you have the owner's manual? It is in there for the '02 model. If you don't have that I can type it up for you.

How to reprogram your remote entry transmitters
You must have all remote entry transmitters (maximum of four)
available before beginning this procedure.
To reprogram the remote entry
transmitters:
1. Ensure the vehicle is
electronically unlocked.
2. Put the key in the ignition.
3. Turn the key from the 2 (LOCK)
position to 3 (OFF).
4. Cycle, eight times, rapidly (within
10 seconds) between the 3 (OFF)
position and 4 (ON). Note: The
eighth turn must end in the 4 (ON) position.
5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been activated.
6. Within 20 seconds press any button on the remote entry transmitter.
Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the
procedure over again.
7. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry
transmitter has been programmed.
8. Repeat Step 6 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
9. Turn the ignition to the 3 (OFF) position after you have finished
programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
10. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been exited.

From Owner's Manual

If you purchase additional
transmitters (up to four may be
programmed), perform the following
procedure:
To reprogram the transmitters
yourself, place the key in the
ignition and turn from OFF to ON
eight times in rapid succession
(within 10 seconds) ending in ON. After doors lock/unlock, press any
control on all transmitters (up to four). When completed, turn the
ignition to OFF. The doors will lock/unlock one last time to confirm
completion of program mode.
All transmitters must be programmed at the same time.

Reprogramming transmitters
To reprogram all transmitters, place the key in the ignition and turn from
OFF to ON eight times in a row (within 10 seconds). After doors
lock/unlock, press any control on all transmitters (up to four). When
completed, turn the ignition to OFF.
All transmitters must be reprogrammed at the same time.

EDIT
Jim, I guess I was about a minute late.

Be sure the truck does have keyless entry too, before you spend money on new remotes. I think if you lock the doors, close them and the marker lights blink you have keyless entry - not positive though

EDIT: Guess you already have a new remote - Good Luck!

I thought my dad said the truck has keyless entry, it is an XLT but I don't know how much of a difference that makes.

Did it not work?

When you get out of the truck, and you hit the power lock button on the door and then close it, do the parking lights blink? Programming the fobs is sometimes a little tricky. You have to do that key cycle EXACTLY like it says or it will not work.

Try again Jacob. Unlock the doors and turn the key to on (not start) and back off 8 times. Count the on position as "1" and when you hit 8, don't turn it back to off again. If the doors lock and unlock by themself at this point, you're ready to start programming the FOB's. If the locks don't do anything, try again. For some reason I was thinking it was 10 times, but apparently it's only 8.

This trick only works if the truck has the factory door unlocker FOB. If there is an aftermarket door lock, this won't work.

It was an option, so maybe. Does his truck have a key FOB for it now? If so, does it look like a Ford factory one, or different? If there is an after market keyless entry system, look under the dash for the control box and then google it to see if you can find the instructions to enter the programming mode.

If the truck never had a key FOB, then odds are, there is no factory GEM. You can still have an aftermarket keyless entry added though.
