3.50 or 4.00 gear ratio

Greetings all. I,m new here and I have 62 Econoline pickup with a 170 ci engine and 3.50 rear gears. The truck revs real high when I'm in third going more than 55 mph. I have a doner 62 with a 4.0 rear with same engine but not running. Would the 4.0 rear give me higher speeds and less rpms and how hard is it to swap out the rears. Thanks Tom

No you want to go the other way 3.27 or 3.08 gears.

3.25 would probably be what you want. Hopefully you aren't climbing a lot of hills. Where are you located????

The Jersey Shore, no hills but many highways that require 65 mph
Any ideas where I can get these gears or different rear

Welcome to FTE

There were three different rear ends offered for these Econolines.

7" rear axle / 7 1/4" rear axle / 9" rear axle.

To determine which rear axle you have, please post the AXLE code from the Warranty Plate.

If a 9" rear axle, the gears are EZ to find.

If one of the others, the gears may be impossible or difficult to find.

Ford didn't offer for Econolines with a 7" or 7 1/4" rear axle, anythng other than 3.50-1 or 4.00-1 gears.

However, the 7 1/4" rear axle was also used in some of the 1962/68 Fairlanes, 1965/70 Mustangs, 1960/70 Falcons and 1970 Mavericks.

These cars offered the 7 1/4" rear axle with 2.83-1 or 3.08-1 gears.

01 = Ford WCC 7 1/4" Ring Gear / 3.50-1 / 2300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity

If I found one of the cars you mentioned how would I be able to identify the rear to see if it has the lower gears

Axle tag on rear end inspection cover or AXLE code off Warranty Plate.

I believe all the 1962-65 Fairlanes and Meteors had an 8" differential (except for rare Hipo 289 cars which had 9"), even the six cylinder cars.

You think yours is revvin at 55, my 64 Ranchero with a 200 and a 2 speed is runnin around 3000 at roughly 53mph. 60 shes runnin around 35, or 3600.

Yeah a c4 would be sweet.

you might want to look into a 3speed trans with overdrive. that way you won't lose power just lower rpm on highway.

1963/70 Fairlane / 1960/70 Falcon / 1965/72 Mustang, all these cars w/6 cylinder engines used the 7 1/4" integral rear axle.

The only Fairlane 6 banger to use a 8" rear end was in 1962.

Mercury Meteors were only made in 1962/63. 6 Cylinder: The 62 would have an 8 inch, the 1963 would not.

I have a guy that can get the 2.83 ring and pinion out of a 1966 ford falcon 7 1 1/4 rear can I take out the 3.50 and put that in ? How difficult is it to do ?

How difficult I dunno, but the parts will interchange.

The 2.83-1 ring & pinion (C5DZ4209C) was used in 1965/70 Falcon's with I-6's.
