Truck work - Oct/08

It's been a while since I saw any work being done to the trucks... since there's an off-topic/bs thread, this is the on-topic/no bs thread.

This past Saturday we replaced my water pump and thermostat. It was leaking pretty bad. Bought a new Fenco pump from Lordco for $153 or so; looks pretty good and has a lifetime warranty. Strange, they supply a cast pipe with it (painted turquoise, lol). It guess it's easy to make, just requires a bit of machining. We just reused the original pipe as it was fine. Also replaced the thermostat of course. Used a Ford square-cut O-ring, as the supplied round O-ring leaked. I didn't know that you have to use an additive in the coolant, but fortunately my friend that did the work is a mechanic at a Ford dealership so everything was done properly. At least I'm ready for winter now. Btw, it was snowing on the Coquihalla Connector this morning.

While he was under the truck, he mentioned that whoever did the oil change used a nylon drain plug gasket instead of a copper gasket. He says that diesels require a copper gasket; I didn't know this, and apparently neither did the guy at Castrol. Well, I'm due for another oil change anyways, so I'll mention that to him.

The Saturday before was spent replacing my rear brake hardline. On the Friday it had sprung a leak in the section between the frame rail and the fuel tank (I think it happened when I stomped on the brakes when somebody cut me off; must have been rusty). Ended up buying a 25-foot roll of 1/4" brake line tubing from Deckers, along with a couple of fittings and a double-flare tool. A friend (Roughcountry on this site) did the work while I supervised. lol It's all good now.

Also that weekend, a buddy gave me a DiabloSport Predator. It wouldn't work at first, saying my truck wasn't licensed for use with that tool, but after a few minutes on the phone with tech support, they had me reset the tuner and my truck has a 60HP tune in it now.

The weekend before that, my friend the above-mentioned Ford mechanic ran the diagnostics on my truck and flash-updated the computer (which had never been done). He noticed that the EBPV sensor was malfunctioning and replaced it; there's a post in the 7.3 forum about this.

That's about it for me. It's nice to have friends!

You have been a busy guy. I have not done anything since my injectors, icp sensor, icp connector, oil change, fuel filter change, transmission filters change, leveling kit install. After all that I hope I have nothing to do until my next oil change.

That tuner must make a nice difference.

Tried to take my exhaust apart last week. It seems to be stuck together quite well. I think I may try again tomorrow or the next day. I want to lose the muffler and maybe the cat but also want to be able to put those back on as well. In other words I don't want to thrash it when I take it apart.

Here is a pictorial of the box removal without the skinned knuckles ..oh I did not show "using improvised fuel pump lock ring tool 101" and the fuel neck and pump replacement either. I figured that since I was in there anyway I would change out the 17 year old pump before it dies, only $170 after tax. Total price fuel neck/pump $360 BUT now I can fill my truck up anywhere not just 3 different pumps (not stations ) in the interior!!!

Good pics. Looks like it went fairly smoothly. Just gotta love those improvised tools. I have a few hanging around as well. Ya that 17 yr old pump may well have been living on borrowed time.

I'm in the middle of trouble shooting a no start prob...working in time units of 1.5-2 hours(bad back) I have replaced the injector o-rings....GPR and plugs...also did a 6337 mod...next I suppose will be the oil leak I discovered after the injectors were done...maybe the new o-rings shifted the pressure to the next weakest link......I suspect an IPR o-ring...hell..is o-ring heaven on these trucks...bein' new to diesels I am going at it slowly...

I have a diesel but it's an 03, 6.0, a whole different animal. I'm pretty new to the diesel thing as well.

Have you tried the 1994.5 - 1997 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel forum yet? If you do a search you may find some useful information

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum170/

Sorry I couldn't be a little more helpful.

I know what you're saying. The problem with mine is there are so many blasted sensors. Once you know the problem they are quite simple to work on. I replaced all my injectors, icp sensor (that was a job in itself) and the icp connector. I do love my diesel though.
