Need new tires for the Ex

My 2001 Ford Excursion is in need of a new set of rubber. I currently have Bridgstone Dueler Revo's on it. I was very happy with the performance, but did not like the wear. I only got about 35k miles out of them to where I feel like they need to be replaced. I was set on the Goodyear Silent Armor Pro Grade's, but I have read a number of reviews that say that the tire roll is horrible and they are not good for towing a heavy trailer. Towing a trailer is what I have the Ex for. My Travel Trailer weighs 9,500lbs and I need a good tire. The Revo's towed fine. What are some other suggestions? How about the Michelin LTX? I'll go back to the Revo's at least knowing that they preformed well.

Many folks on this board, me included, like the Goodyear Silent Armors Pro Grade. I have them but have not towed with them yet.

That's the problem, I need to hear from someone who has experience towing heavy loads with them. ALL the consumer reviews that I could find (Tire Rack, Discount Tire web sites) that mentioned towing with them gave them poor marks. This seems odd because the Pro Grades claim to be specifically designed for towing.

I really like my Pirelli's, have about 10K on 'em and they are meeting or exceeding my expectations.

I also have the Pirelli Scorpions. I have the STR, not the ATR. PROSTOCK may have the ATRs but I do not like the STR at all. Bad wet traction. Stopping and starting in rain is nearly impossible and the traction gets worse below freezing. Slipping and sliding on dry pavement below 30 degrees.

From the reviews online, the ATRs seem to be much better but I'll probably try another brand instead of the Pirellis next time around.

I only towed once in a while with them but they seemed fine as long as it was warm and dry.

I have about 20k on my Goodyears. I tow a 6k boat on the weekends and have towed my dump trailer with 10K in it as well. I have been very happy with them. The only thing that I did not like is when I rotated them according to the manual. It was out of controll until they wore back in. They have been great up in the mountains in the snow over last winter as well.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I haven't really found any convincing evidence to get anything but another set of Revo's. I have to say that they have performed quite well, and I shouldn't complain too much about the 35k miles. Almost all of that was towing my $9,500 lb trailer.

I have run the Revo's on both my suburbans and my ex when I got it and have never been dissapointed. I usually get aroung 50k out of them. What pressures did you run them at?

I have the Michelin LTX MS Load Range E on mine - they were on it when I bought the X with 114k and now I'm/ @ 147k and looking to replace them. I would estimate that they had about 70% tread when I got the X. I've been happy with the performance and they get traction in wet and mud (we don't get much snow, so I really can't attest to that). The only problem with me replace them with same is the price - locally the lowest price I've found is at Sam's Club for $188 each ($752 for the set), right now Michelin is giving $80 off per set, so $672 for the set - Ouch!. These would be my first choice - but my pockets are not that deep rightnow.

I know other that have the Rugged Trail TA tires and have been happy with them. They are a bit less expensive.

I think the biggest thing for towing is to ensure you get a Load range E tire and proper inflation.

I also have the Michelin LTX M/S Load Range E tires on my diesel X. I put them on at 14,000 miles and now have 70,000 miles on the X with 1/3 of the tread remaining. I tow a 6K Scarab and a 10K Bri-Mar dump trailer with no problem.

Ok, I was all set on getting another set of Bridgestone Revo's and called my local Firestone service center. I can get the Revo's for $700 OTD, not that bad!!. The sales guy also told me about Firestone Transforce A/T's. He says that these are more of a "commercial" tire and will wear much better that the Revo's (this is the only complaint I had with them). He also said that the performance will be on par with the Revo's. These Transforce A/T are the replacements for the old Steeltex A/T's that my Ex came with from the factory. I can get the Transforce for $570 OTD, a really good price!!. Does anyone have experience with these tires? I really don't want to trade any performance just to get better wear.

I run the Michelin LTS M/S E rated tires on my Excursion and E350 and tow with both vehicles. I've run these tires and their predecessor models on all my trucks for about 30 year and love them. Great ride (for a 10 ply rating) and excellent wet and dry road adhesion as well as excellent towing stability.

We're running the Firestone commercial 16" radials on our bus and they're wearing well but they don't have the ride and traction like the Michelins.

New Tires

Hi, I have the Excursion. I Have the Nitto All terrain tire Called the Trea Grappler i havent had any problems with what so ever. I don't do any towing, but i wanted to tell u about a new Nitto brand tire called the Dura Grappler. From what i read this tire is made for big trucks and SUVs that do lots of towing & hauling. E load range, exceptional wet performance, long tread life, etc. NITTOTIRE.COM
