F250 Automatic 4x4 doesn't seem to engage

I am the new owner of a 1996 F250 with what is supposed to be "Automatic" 4x4, I have no owners manual or other literature to browse for info...I have been stuck twice and neither time did any wheel other than the right rear do any pulling, the left rear puleed only grudgingly, the front wheels never pulled at all....this morning I could see from my winching location that the axles were spining on the front, but no power was transferred to the wheel at all...what gives? is this system not so "automatic" after all? do I need to make some adjustments?

Hey.....well i have not had much experience with auto locking hubs but i do know that they are crap. (unless you really like em) My advise would invest in a pair of Warn Manual locking hubs. They are also cheep too ($80-$100) They are very strong and they allow you to have a 2wd low. AND you can put a locker in the front axle if you want too. Just a though.....
